Default System restore

Is it possiable to reinstall just system restore? No matter what firewall I
seem to use, after installing, the system restore won't create any restore
points. I am assuming that the system restore is damaged some how. I have
tried Sygate and Zone Alarm, both cause the same problem. Thanks for any
advice.

Is it possiable to reinstall just system restore?

No

I am assuming that the system restore is
damaged some how.

IMO unlikely although the control files in the C:\_RESTORE folder might be
damaged in which case resetting system restore is usually enough to fix
the problem.

Incidentally far more applications than firewalls can cause system restore
not to create automatic checkpoints. Have you eliminated all applications
you have installed that run each time you boot your PC?

Before we dive in and try fixing things that may not be broken could you
please try the following quick test to help narrow down the problem.
a) Create a shortcut on your desktop to a file.
b) Create a manual checkpoint
Could you create a checkpoint?
c) Delete the shortcut
d) Restore your PC to the checkpoint you created.
Was the shortcut restored? Did you see any error messages?
e) Reboot your PC
Was the checkpoint retained?

Regards,

Hi Mike, I did what you suggested and the check point was created. The
shortcut was restored. And no error messeages and the check point was
retained.
I have elimnated all other applications that it might be. It must be the
firewall because when I shut the firewall down the restore works fine and
when it's enabled it won't work at all. Although I can create manual restore
points.

FWIW, I use Agnitum Outpost v1 firewall (freeware) and have no problems with
system restore.

Peter.

If it is your firewall, although odd that this happens regardless of the
firewall you are using, then don't forget that system restore is still
working, all that is happening is that it isn't creating automatic
checkpoints. In other words it is still archiving copies of amended and
deleted system files but you will only be able to restore to checkpoints
that you deliberately created. Some would even say that this is the best
approach as this means you know the exact state of your system when each
checkpoint was created rather than having to take pot luck from a
collection of checkpoints created at random times when the state of the
system is in some way unknown.

Peter

Do you have Spybot S & D installed? and if so is teatimer running? Uncheck
teatimer as one cause of preventing SR making auto RPs. (this was the case
in v1.03, I did inform the Spybot folk but never had a reply). Don't know if
this issue has been fixed in v1.04. Maybe siljaline can advise.

The free ZA 5.5.094.000 personal firewall is working just fine here under
winME, and SR sometimes creates three auto checkpoints in a day.

Peter should install the new version, even replacing the current one with a
freshly DL'd copy if he is using ver. .094.

Both Mike M and Heirloom recently reported that other interfering programs
were responsicle fo their lack of Sr auto points.
I suspect the same is true for Peter. Time to inspect MSconfig/Startup and
any process viewer to identify the culprit.

My suspicion is that the OP has activated the logging capabilities of the
various firewalls - and not realised that such an action means that the
firewall will write to the disk every xx seconds - if that time-period is
extended beyond 120seconds, then there's a good chance that SR will function
as advertised (if the firewall can't offer such an option, then try turning
off all logging, and see if that works - then try activating logging of
specific events....)
