Default USB notification missing

On one of my 98SE systems, I am not getting the notification that a USB
device is plugged in and there is no icon in the systray, therefore I do not
have the ability to safely remove it. What do I need to do to get this on my
system? I have that ability on all the XP systems and my 98SE laptop, but
this one system has never had it. Is it a matter of adding something to the
registry? Please, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Does the USB controller appear as a device in Device Manager, and is it
reported as operating OK?

If it doesn't appear then you may need to enable it in BIOS setup - many
machines of W98 vintage were delivered with USB available but not enabled.
You will then need to install drivers for the USB controller - they are
probably part of the motherboard driver set.

The devices do appear in Device Manager and they all work properly. I just
don't get the icon in the systray and the ability to click on it to safely
remove the device. USB is enables in the BIOS.

What devices are you having the problem with? Many devices do not need to
be removed safely - they can be unplugged without warning.

The system tray icon you're referring to works with USB and Firewire
enclosure devices like a HD or DVD/DVD writer. Such did not appear on my
system until I added a Firewire connected HD. Whereas when the USB devices
had connected prior to that were a mouse, and printer with no such icon.
Does the PC you're referring to have such removable enclosure devices?

I'm referring to my flash drives and my external hard drive. I never
thought about it before on this computer, however I did get a corrupted
flash drive and I believe it must be because it was not "safely"
disconnected from the computer.
