Caution! "A sites for?"
To all,
I looked at this post, "A sites for?", dated 11/1/2004, 5:20AM (on my machine) and it immediately started some sort of download. I hit the cancel button as quickly as I could.....not sure if I stopped the dl'd or not and did not get a look at what was being sent to my machine. Have run Spybot and nothing has been picked up by my EZ AV. In any case, it is SPAM! If anyone has an idea of what the dl'd was, let me know so I can look for it. Heirloom |

Heirloom Hi Heirloom: I got a similar message in e-mail last week, ZA Pro quarantined the attachment which AVG identified as "I-Netsky" I believe. I have been getting a number of cryptic one to four word messages over the past week all of which were from *@AOLcom addresses. Most with "I-Netsky" attached some with "Bagel". Funny, when I have AVG check the attachments it finds the virus's but when I scan the files from the main menu it does not find the "Bagel" infections. I just delete them from my drive. This may or not be relevant to your question but, who knows. sced13ri (Too old to catch a virus) |

Not sure that what you are seeing is related.....guess it could be. I wish
I had had time to see what was attempting to download, but, my first reaction was to hit cancel and the window closed. Are you using the ver 7 of the EZ AV?? I have encountered a number of issues with the new version.....seems it doesn't play well with others. eTrust assures me that they are aware of the problems and their tech folks are working on it. Have you noticed any probs? Zone Alarm Pro has been catching the intruders and I have been cleaning up with AVG. I check the files first for the virus since ZA Pro only quarantines the suspects but, does not identify the virus. Hope you sort it all out. sced13ri "looneytunesverizone.net verizone.net " "looneytunes wrote in message ... heirloom wrote: To all, I looked at this post, "A sites for?", dated 11/1/2004, 5:20AM (on my machine) and it immediately started some sort of download. H,
Running a "virgin" Win Me install with little or no protection other than being on a Virtual PC and behind a router I had nothing download when I visited the spam site referred to in the original post. Of course I discarded any changes before exiting the VPC so if anything was downloaded it will not be present when I next use that particular VPC. :-) -- Mike heirloom wrote: To all, I looked at this post, "A sites for?", dated 11/1/2004, 5:20AM (on my machine) and it immediately started some sort of download. Well, that's just too cool.........I need to check into running in the same
manner. Routers are getting pretty cheap and that would be some great 'insurance.' Any particular router you would recommend? Does it require additional software to do what you are doing?? Router:
I'm currently using a Netgear 834G which is a 4 port router with ADSL modem and wireless access point. Overall I've been very satisfied with this purchase which was bought a few months ago on a Sunday when I was desperate to quickly get back on line after my long serving Efficient 5861 router/modem decided to die on me. I use NAT on the router which in itself is an effective firewall and then set up various rules and port directions as required for my applications. As you say routers have dropped considerably in price and a router without modem or wireless access point can be purchased here in the UK for US$50 or so. Virtual PC: I use Microsoft's Virtual PC2004 (I have yet to try the latest 2005 release or even install SP1). In the UK this retails at around US$150 or so. My main two PCs both run XP Pro SP2 and both have VPC installed which then allows me to run Win Me on those PCs (as well as other operating systems) in a window. I have three basic Win Me images I use, a virgin installation with no patches or AV application or firewall, a fully patched system with IE5.5 SP2, DX8 and WMP7, AV and firewall, and a fully patched system with IE6 SP1, DX9 and WMP9, AV and firewall. I also have a fairly old celeron 400 which exclusively runs Win Me (IE5.5 SP2, DX8 and WMP7) and also Office 2000 and many other applications. Finally I have an even older PII 450 that multiboots, is all scsi and runs Win Me (IE6 SP1, DX9 and WMP9) and has Office 2002/XP installed although I have to admit that that PC is probably only used once a month. -- Mike heirloom wrote: Well, that's just too cool.........I need to check into running in the same manner. Phew. Where do you put your furniture? :-) I had no idea you had so much
equipment going at once.....your power bill must be atrocious. The only item I recognized was the PII-450, since I am still running this ol' PII-400. Would it be worth my while to set up the VPC, since this is my only machine and I am on a cable modem? Sure wish you were my neighbor.....you would be a handy person to have around g. Heirloom LOL As for VPC, I need to check but think that it only runs on XP Pro - I used to think it could also run on XP Home but apparently not. I'll check it out later. How much RAM does your PII have? And storage? I've had no real problems running XP on the PII 450 although I have to admit I've never tried installing and running VPC. I might give it a whirl this weekend and let you know how I get on. I know what you mean about that lot taking up room. You should see my network printer (HP4550) it weighs about 120lb or so and is a great big hunk of a piece. Power bills aren't too bad even though I tend to have three PCs up and running 24/7. The celeron 400, an AMD XP2500+ (1GB RAM and four disks totalling around 500GB) and this box an AMD 64 3200+ again with 1GB of RAM and three disks totalling about 500GB. It could just be that I've grown used to the cost. Of course, being London I don't have any a/c to worry about. :-). One of the biggest items though is the 19" CRT monitor on my desk which I'd love to replace by a decent sized TFT monitor but not at current prices. I have two "work stations", that is monitor, keyboard and mouse, setup and use a four way and two way KVM switch, one at each workstation, to switch between the various boxes with one of the ways on the four way box space to allow me to hitch in "visiting" PCs that are in for repair etc. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP |
