Have you been able to get the "safely remove hardware" icon to
appear, I have the same problems with Windows ME.

I do have the same problem. I use 2 usb devices (an external CDRW and a flash
drive). System recognizes both devices and everything works fine.

The problem is that I cannot safely remove them. (I have to shutdown before
unpluging).
The only problem is the missing taskbar icon.
Everything else seems to be OK.
Any ideas?

What same problem?
I have never had a taskbar icon with Win98 SE for any USB drives and
have no problem if I wait a few seconds after closing any of their
windows down before removing the drive.
What happens with you?

The problem is excactly what I tried to describe. For some reason, one day I
connected my USB device and the safely remove hardware icon did nor appeared
in the taskbar. When I had to disconnect the usb device (an Iomega flash
drive) I had no other option but to simply plug it off (without safely
removing it as I used to do).
When I do that, pc freezes and I have to restart.

(Note : Rightclicking on the drive icon in My Computer and clicking on Eject
option does not help.)

The Eject option sounds like it should work, but it simply sends an eject
command to the device. Some devices can eject their media, some can't. It is
not associated with disconnecting the device from Windows. I would love to
see the disconnect option on the right-click menu (and I guess that would
also be a way around your problem).
