Default Loss of User Profile Data & Settings

I've recently had a problem where Windows ME has lost the
data and settings for an established user profile. When
this problem happens, I am logging into the computer, then
I see a bunch of files being copied and Windows ME
settings being updated. Once I am logged in, I get a
default desktop, and it has wiped out my Outlook Express
connection & identity.

I have used System Restore to recover the user profile.
Does anyone know why the OS might be losing the profile
information and how I can prevent it from happening?

Thanks.
