Default DOS=HIGH,UMB causing shutdown hang

After a process of elimination I have found that
DOS=HIGH,UMB is the line in config.sys causing my computer
to hang on shutdown. I have tried moving the lines
around in the order suggested and although the system shut
down the first time, it has continued to hang ever since.
If I untick it what will happen? If I have to leave it
what can I do to rectify the problem? Also besides this
line I have 9 other lines, should there be that many?
Hope someone can help me. Thanks

Try with a blank config.sys
Win98 does not normally need config.sys, though it will use entries if
there.
Copy and paste the whole lot here if you need a second opinion.

Thanks for the reply, I have not tried this yet but here
is how it stands at present but I have no idea what they
stand for or do:

DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE=C\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS X=A000-F7FF
DOS=HIGH,UMB

FILES=150
BUFFERS=60,0
STACKS=12,256
LASTDRIVE=Z

DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS/TESTMEM:OFF
device=c:\windows\COMMAND\display.sys con=[ega,,1]
country=044,850,c:\windows\COMMAND\country.sys

I'd try FILES=40 , at 150 you mean that that is the max number of files you want to be able to
access at any given time. Most are usually 25 or 40

BUFFERS=60,0
STACKS=12,256
LASTDRIVE=Z

My guess the last lines (below this) are at fault, more than likely the middle line, possibly even
the last line.

DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS/TESTMEM:OFF
device=c:\windows\COMMAND\display.sys con=[ega,,1]
country=044,850,c:\windows\COMMAND\country.sys

I use DOS quite alot and only have these lines in my CONFIG:

DEVICE=C:\essolo.sys
DEVICE=C:\Windows\Command\ANSI.sys

ESSOLO is my mouse so I can use that for proggies which allow for the little rodents to run around.
and ANSI is so that I can have colorful propts as well as general environmental control, such as
assigning commands to my function keys.

Actually, ESSOLO is an audio driver for DOS, so you can have sound in DOS-mode
games. It has nothing to do with your mouse.

Doh! I know that, don't know why I wrote that, perhaps I was thinking of when I had edited it to
include my mouse driver. Need to work on my typing thinking coordination :-)

Still trying to sort this, I unticked the middle line as=20
suggested and computer still hangs. What does=20
DOS=3DHIGH,UMB do then?

It sets an area aside in the memory with a HIGH amount located in the Upper
Memory Block. The purpose IIRC being faster access. But that would be for
DOS stuff basically.

I think I recall reading that disabling write behind caching can speed
things up a bit, possibly even the hangs at shutdown. But I would get a
second surgical opinion.
