Default CD drives won't read properly after a clean install

I have formatted my PC - reinstalled windows 98 from the CD and now when i
go to install my sound card etc drivers from cd (won't even play a music cd)
Neither of my cd drives want to know - I just get a blue screen after a few
seconds. Somtimes you can see a few files on the cd - then - nothing. Has
anyone got any idea?
