Default volume control

I am having a problem with my speakers. They were working
fine a few days ago and now they are not working at all.
I checked my connections and they are fine. When I
unplugged the speakers because I thought I put the cord in
the wrong slot, I heard the speakers pop and they also
popped when I turned the power off and on.

I tried opening volume control, but it will not open for
me. I tried going to multimedia in control panel and
checking off to have volume control in my taskbar and it
is shaded gray. Under audio in multimedia, under playback
and recording, the preferred device is listed as "use any
available device." I also checked my sound card and it is
listed.

Does anyone have any other ideas for me. Oh, also, when
using MSN Messenger a few months ago, I did have a problem
with my sound and when I opened up volume by turning off
something. I can't remember what it is right now, without
looking at.

Thanks.
