Default Sound problems

Windows Media Player 9.0 is experiencing problems playing
anything I ask of it. I get an error message that it is a
corrupt file or one that WMP cannot play.
QuickTime won't work either. It always causes an illegal
operations error. This has just been the last two weeks.
I went to Control Panel to check for sound configuration
and Multimedia and Sound will not even open! I got this
error message when trying to adjust audio properies:
Error loading mmsys.cpl. One of the library files needed
to open this application cannot be found.
What the heck is wrong? I'm starting to lose it!
