If you don't know what brand the drive is, you can download the limited-use free
edition of OnTrack Data Advisor from this location:
http://www.ontrack.com/freesoftware/#dataadvisor

When you click the download link on that page for Data Advisor 5.0 Free edition, you
will be taken to a page to register with the OnTrack site, then you will be able to
download the diskette creator file.

The downloads are diskette creators. They are to be run once from a working Windows
system and will guide you through the process of extracting the Data Advisor onto a
3.5" floppy disk.

Download and Use Instructions:

Good Evening, Glen~

Um... stuck in stupid, here. *blushes*

Brand of hard drive? I have an old system-Compaq Presario EZ2600 bought
back in 1999. Until this 'glitch' it ran suprisingly well for such an old
girl. ) How do I find out the 'brand' of hard drive, or is it safe to
assume that it would be a Compaq, since it's a Compaq system?

(Geez... could my face get any redder?)

Thank you again!

You mentioned that the person who installed Windows for you stated that there

was
"some sort of glitch" with your hard drive. I suggest that you download the

drive
diagnostic software for your brand hard drive, use it to create the diagnostic
floppy disk ,and then boot with that floppy and run the diagnostic test. You

could
instead have that person run the diags for you.

Alrighty,

I checked your reply then went and looked for MSBackup which I found and had
it back up my entire system. It reports back that it was completed, but with
errors. If you need to see the log with the messege I can come back and post
it, if it will help. I will wait to see what your reply is first. Is there
a better BackUp program out there (freeware, plz) that might be better that
you would recommend? If so, what and where?

As to the IP addy you suggested changed and might help with one of the
delays - I changed it per your instructions and I lost my connection. I had
to call in to DSL Tech Help, to restore my connection. Had me scared there
for a while.

Thank you, and I'll be checking back from time to time to see if you've had
the opportunity to reply. Believe me, I know how it is to get soooo busy.

Thanks for your time!

Still hangin' in there...lol

Are you on a network of any kind? I am guessing you are not. This should

help
with
one of the delays:

Click Start Settings Control Panel Network Configuration tab.
Click to select TCP/IP bound to the Ethernet/Network adapter, in the list of
components.
Click the Properties button.
Click the IP Address tab Specify, and assign an IP address of:
192.168.0.2 and a subnet mask of: 255.255.255.0
Click OK all the way out, and reboot when prompted.

Do you have a tape-backup drive, and/or do you use or have installed any

backup
program, including MSBackup that comes with Windows?

Yes, one is always best running the mfgr's diagnostics.

I mis-read OP and thought he was looking for a replacement drive that was
exactly the same as what he had.

Yes, one is always best running the mfgr's diagnostics.

I mis-read OP and thought he was looking for a replacement drive that was
exactly the same as what he had.

Open the case and look!?

Why is the brand important ?

Because with the exception of OnTrack Data Advisor and older versions of

SeaTools,
the disk diagnostics are vendor-specific and do not work on other brands

of hard
drives.

Alrighty,

I checked your reply then went and looked for MSBackup which I

found
and had
it back up my entire system. It reports back that it was

completed,
but with
errors. If you need to see the log with the messege I can come

it, if it will help. I will wait to see what your reply is first.

Is
there
a better BackUp program out there (freeware, plz) that might be

As to the IP addy you suggested changed and might help with one of

Good Evening, Glen~

Sorry it took so long in replying to your post! Over the last 2 days I had
repeatedly attempted to get into this part of the site and it wouldn't show.
('page unavailable'). Finally I was able to this evening! I have copied and
pasted your reply into a word doc. (in case I can't get back here to re-check
your post and I need the instructions again and I run into the same 'page
unavailable' thing.) I will post back as soon as I am able with the info.
needed.

Thank you, and have a good evening.

The downloads are diskette creators. They are to be run once from a working Windows

If you don't know what brand the drive is, you can download the limited-use free

When you click the download link on that page for Data Advisor 5.0 Free edition, you
will be taken to a page to register with the OnTrack site, then you will be able to
download the diskette creator file.

The downloads are diskette creators. They are to be run once from a working Windows

Brand of hard drive? I have an old system-Compaq Presario EZ2600 bought

Instead of using the web browser interface to read the groups, it is far easier to
use a newsreader. Outlook Express (OE) comes free with Internet Explorer, and acts
as both a mail client and a newsreader. Here are some links explaining how to set
it up:
