How many people are still using Windows 98 in 2006
How many people, percentage-wise, are still using Windows 98/98SE/ME on
their PCs? I figure you tech types see Windows 98/98SE/ME all the time still? What do you figure is the current install base etc. ? Any comments on using Windows 98 in 2006? Thanks |

You can get some idea from this page:
Counter.com - Global Statistics - Browsers, screen resolutions, operating systems, etc., that use this website counter. http://www.thecounter.com/stats/ But it doesn't take into consideration Win98 PCs that are no longer online, but are still in use in offices, etc. Eric, PC Buyer Beware! http://www.pcbuyerbeware.co.uk/ "Gospel" wrote: How many people, percentage-wise, are still using Windows 98/98SE/ME on their PCs? Thanks I keep on running into PCs with Windows 98 on them. I can imagine there are a lot out there, not necessarily on the the Net, but sitting there as a second computer in the office or workshop or on a laptop. |

Yeah, but a '43 Dodge would be a more appropriate comparison. After all the
work to keep that Dodge in good condition, all the effort to find gas that won't screw it up, the discomfort of driving it in 100 degree weather, the *total* lack of safety features... Put it on the Bayshore freeway at 5:30 PM on a Friday... Gonna be hard to keep it from boiling over... I'd do it on a dare, but only with a trailer-load of spare water. -- Gary S. How many people are still using Windows 98 in 2006
In our computer club, we have 204 paid memberships, and over 1/3 of these members are still using
Windows 98 as their principal computer and about 1/2 still have their windows 98 computer in some form of use. Of course almost 80% of our members are senior citizens living on fixed income and don't see the need for updating as they most use the computer for email and games. I still maintain a lot of these computers for them and for what they want, Windows 98 on a 700 MHz PC with dial-up internet is all they need. (PS We live in a rural area where "If the Wal-Mart don't have it, you don't need it!" problem exists. There are no computer shops within 90 miles.) They are building yet another Wal-Mart here. I am happy to report I've yet to buy a single thing from Wal-Mart .. not even a stick of gum. But yes, there are a lot of people, especially seniors .. but others too, who don't get around to all the websites. They wouldn't show up in the statistics. They do use email - and some of them email a lot - and they do use 700MHz computers and dial-up and Windows 98. And they need support. Some hardly use the Internet period. For example one past client of mine, a haberdasher, has an HP in his shop. Although it can dial-up connect, he doesn't surf nor email. The computer runs Windows 98 and he use it principally to do some bookkeeping of sorts with his MS Works spreadsheet program which I set up for him and taught him how to operate. He really sees no reason to upgrade. And I can't think of one neither .. to do so would only complicate his life. The computer will probably last until he retires and that's enough. Then again, some seniors really benefit from the improved security of Windows XP SP2. They surf, email, do bankning and are quite busy on their computers and Windows 98 just doesn't seem to cut it for avoiding the malware. I encourage them to switch to Windows XP even if the computer came with Windows 98. |
