Default Lost hard drive?

I added an additional hard drive 4 years ago which has worked fine and was
designated as "D".Today when I went to access a file which I knew from past
experience was on this "D" drive I was unable to obtain the file and when I
go to "my compuer" it no longer shows this "D" drive but uses that name for
what used to be "E" file .Is the additional hard drive dead? What to do?

Thanks,
Hank

though the drive could be dead...
you should check all connections...
also see if it's detected in the bios

I did a quick google and saw that an "F3" tap would take me to BIOS.I did
that after a manual restart, did NOT see BIOS but...
the "D" drive has returned!! Your skill/long distance Mojo is appreciated
:)

This is a hint that nonappearance of the drive may
have been caused by cable malfunction. This
happened to me because of the combination
of a wrong jumper setting (C, not M or S) and
a flaky power supply to the drive. (Fortunately
most PCs have several extra power supply plugs.)
An unrelated possible cause is a weak and
dying CMOS battery (see earlier posts on how
to locate and replace it.)

As a drive gets older it can take longer to spin up and come ready. If it
takes too long the system doesn't detect it as existing in the system and
won't allocate a drive letter. If the problem occurs again, restart Windows
without turning the machine off and see if the drive is then recognised.

I did as suggested and was able to get it recognized...although I am not
anxious to buy a new PC,this one is 7 years old,used daily X 2-5 hours and I
wonder if it is about to quit.
