Default Need help with Win98 and Zone alarm, please.

I'm using an HP Pavilion 8750C with Win 98 SE and I got this message
today when I downloaded the program Zone Alarm:-

" Validation failed for C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\VSINIT.DLL You are probably
missing a necessary root certificate "

I'm not a computer whiz but I did a search for the file and it _is_
on my C drive.

This came after I had reformatted and reinstalled 98 using the
'official' HP
'system recovery' disks.

I would appreciate it if someone could advise me how to proceed from
here.

Thanks.

Lewis.

You haven't put your question very well.

Did you get the message while downloading ZA or when you tried to install it?

If you got the message when you tried to download it, then there must be
restrictions set under Internet Options in the Control Panel that are not
allowing the download, or you have another firewall, etc., that is preventing
the download.

If you can't install it (I take it that it's the free ZA 6.0) then you
probably didn't remove the previous version of ZA or another firewall
properly, so try reinstalling any previous firewall and then remove it
properly before you install the ZA 6.0.

There is a user forum on the ZA site - http://www.zonelabs.com/ - that you
can post your problem to if you don't get satisfaction here.

This file does not show until ZA or ZA Pro is installed.
You may be confusing the word "download" with "install". Don't worry,
common nowadays.

The file is part of the truevector. Same identical file also under the
repair subfolder of the ZA subfolder.

Either the download (copy from the internet site) was inaccurate, resulting
in a inaccurate install. In that case simply redownload the ZA installation
file. Deinstall your current ZA software, then reinstall using the newly
downloaded file.
Or, the file in the current folder is invalid. In that case, while in dos
only mode, simply copy the same file from the repair folder I previously
mentioned. Try this first.

Thanks for your reply.

I got the message when I tried to install it.

Since I had just done the 'reformat/restore system' thing I assumed I
was starting with a clean disk but, as I said, I'm not a computer whiz,
so I could have made an incorrect assumtion.

Kind regards.

Lewis.

ZA 6 is meant for XP. (It says so somewhere)

ZA 5.5 could work on 98SE, if resources don't become an issue.

From my own experience, I found that the latest Zone Alarm reacted badly
with Windows 98SE. I reduced the Security level in Zone Alarm just 1 level,
and they now work together without problem. To this I can add one friend who
has Win98SE and Zone Alarm and has the ZA security level set at the highest,
and another who, like me, has to use the mid-level.

Good luck

Graham

I'm using ZA 6.0.667.000 (free edition) and have both Trusted and
Internet zones set to High.
