Default Sound problems

To Rick, Mart & BarryG and all other helpful souls out there

Thanks for your earlier advice on my soundcard problems. In spite of all
efforts, reliable functioning of my sound card was not possible.

To confirm, my Creative oem card was not mounted on a PCI slot but as I
suspected a chipset on the mother board. I came across a reference to a
Creative on board sound card somewhere (can't remember where).

Anyway I raided the piggy bank and bought myself a new PCI sound card and
installed that and ticked "disable in this hardware profile" and all is
well. Sound works - Whoopee!

Thanks again

Delboy

I suspect this modern sound card and its driver, and its increased feature
set, will be much better for you.

Now go get that 5-1 surround sound speaker set you've been panting for ...

I presume that you also remembered to disable it (your 'on-board' sound
chip) in the BIOS g

But well done and I'm pleased you've now restored your sound. Thanks for the
feedback.

Hi Mart

The very nice man on the PC World repair counter also said to disable the on
board sound in the BIOS. I looked through the BIOS and the only mention of
sound was in Integrated Peripherals AC97 Audio - options Auto/Disabled.
Original setting "Auto"

Being chicken, I left it as it was with no apparent ill effects. Should I
disable AC97 Audio? The BIOS is Amibios American Megatrends (c) 1999.

As the resident audio guy, I can say the AC97 in AUTO mode generally is
fine, but if in doubt, try disabling it, it won't hurt you.

Well... I would normally say yes - But if it's working OK then perhaps leave
well alone g

On the other hand, if there are more than one Sound Card item shown in
Device Manager - especially in Normal Mode - then I'd be very tempted to
disable it. You are likely to get conflicts otherwise.

My BIOS only gives enabled/disabled option and as I have a PCI card in my
box, so the option is set to disabled. I'm not too sure what the auto option
is supposed to do.

Just re-visited my BIOS - Correction!

My BIOS only gives Auto/Disabled option - No Enabled option!!

When I fitted my PCI sound card (a couple of years ago), I must have set it
to from Auto to Disabled.

So my previous advice still holds - particularly after seeing BJH's post on
this thread.

Went for the jugular - disabled AC97 - fingers, legs & eyes all crossed.

No apparent problems. Still can always reset to Auto if any problems arise.

Thanks to all for suggestions.
