Reinstalling IE (for debugging) - any caveats?
I was wondering if there are any things to be concerned about in doing a
reinstall (for the same version) of just IE? Any caveats? I know I'd probably have to (or should) reinstall some windows updates afterwards, but that is part of the reason I wouldn't mind doing this (see below): I was thinking of doing this, because a couple of web sites weren't displaying everything that they were supposed to (like a purchase cart button at one web site doesn't appear on MY browser, and at another specific web site, when I click on certain links, nothing ever happens). I don't believe I have this problem at work (but that is also using a different version of IE - I'm still using IE 5.5 SP1) I figure this behavior could possibly be due to some windows updates I had taken in (which I can't uninstall), but I'm only guessing here. So I thought a good way to check this, (and possibly resolve it), would be to reinstall IE (with the same version), and see if that clears it up. BUT - I don't want to do this if it can be problematic (like reinstalling Windows as an overinstall - I wouldn't do that!!!!) |

StartRun enter Msinfo32, under the Tools menu. I recently had a Dos Compatibility problem, nothing helped. I un-installed IE 5.5 SP2 and it reverted back to previous version, IE 5.0. I then over-installed Win 98 SE then re-installed IE5.5. No problems and system running fine. You may think about un-installing IE then re-installing 5.5 instead of just an IE over-install. That should remove the updates. Your previous version of IE may be restored so then you have an upgrade. I ran IE 5.0 that it reverted to for awhile to see how things went before I over-installed Win SE and no problems. Wait for other replies. I also forgot to mention that I tried temporarily disabling stuff like the pop up killers and virus scanners, to no avail. I mean, this problem only happens in a VERY few isolated instances. It's almost not worth bothering with - almost. :-) I tried researching the MS kb's, but didn't find anything pertinent to my specific case. It MIGHT be possibly due to using IE 5.5 SP1, and not using something newer, for all I know. But I didn't see that addressed in the supposed fixes listed for IE 5.5 SP2 You want to see an example of a web site that gives me the problem? Here is a link: http://www.ulead.com/store/dp/runme.htm On my computer here at home, the actual download link (for the Full English Version) and purchase cart button are missing on this web page. (They weren't missing at work) StartRun enter Msinfo32, under the Tools menu. Actually, that sounds a bit riskier (to me) than just an IE overinstall, since I wouldn't bet my life on how well it will revert back to the earlier version, including OE. I'd rather not risk THAT! I think if I just reinstall the same version, at least some of the updates will be effectively "removed" (if it even allows me to reinstall it). Your previous version of IE may be restored so then you have an upgrade. I ran IE 5.0 that it reverted to for awhile to see how things went before I over-installed Win SE and no problems. Wait for other replies. OK - thanks. Regards, Bill Watt Computer Help and Information http://home.epix.net/~bwatt/ |

Bill, Why not install IE6?
If you are using IE5.5, you should be using SP2, not SP1. Have you tried deleting the History folder and TIF from a DOS boot, using the Deltree command? -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP W95/98 Systems http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "Bill in Co." wrote in message ... So that *probably* narrows it down to a limitation in IE 5.5 SP1, (and/or a windows update, except that you have probably taken in those updates too), so ... most likely it is a deficiency in IE 5.5 SP1. Although I still find that a bit hard to believe, unless that "Add To Cart" stuff uses some advanced Javascript, or whatever. Opera also sees all three like Netscape. I have been holding off this time around (after I did a new Win98SE install some time ago), because I liked the "more open nature" of IE 5.5 SP1 to ActiveX controls and Netscape-compatible controls that was blocked in IE 5.5 SP2 (and later versions). But I may decide to bite the bullet, and go to SP2 anyway, seeing the problem I have here. Have you tried deleting the History folder and TIF from a DOS boot, using the Deltree command? Yeah, I've done that. Nada. Thanks for the suggestions, Glen. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP W95/98 Systems http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "Bill in Co." wrote in message ... Unbelieveable!!!! I was getting a bit bored, so I just went ahead and
upgraded to IE 5.5 SP2, and I *still* don't see that stuff on the web page!!!! Presumably I have something running here that is blocking it(?) But I disabled those goodies last time around, even including the HOSTS file. I'll have to try it again. Really, really bizarre...! Oh - and Adobe Acrobat and Quicktime still work in the browser (yippie!) w/o my having to *fix that* (like last time I went thru this IE upgrade), for some reason. (Last time I went thru this upgrade to IE 5.5 SP2 I had to go to the Apple site to get some patch for that. Maybe that was after I took in some of the "windows updates" My Microsoft Start Menu help troubleshooters still work, but I haven't taken in all the Windows updates (obviously). And I'm not sure I will, at this point. Bill Watt wrote: On Tue, 23 Nov 2004 00:07:27 -0700, "Bill in Co." wrote: You want to see an example of a web site that gives me the problem?
