Default Windows 98 problems installing USB adapter

I am running Windows 98SE on Dell Dimension XPS T600 440BX
PIII.
Problems started when I tried to install Netgear wireless
USB adapter. During installation it asked for Windows 98
CD to be inserted because it couldn't find various files.
I repeated the process many times and the files that were
usually being requested we
secur32.dll; svrapi.dll; nxdis.vxd; ndis2sup.vxd;
ndiswmi.sys; vnetbios.vxd; loxproxy; locproxy2;
nettrans.cat; network.

Nothing happened when I inserted the CD (all the files are
in Cabinets). After contacting Netgear they said locate
the files on the C drive (C:\windows\system and
C:\windows) and use them instead of the Windows CD when
prompted by the computer. This resulted in the Adapter
hardware installation process finishing "successfully" but
the Netgear utility program to control the Adapter did not
install (except on one occasion, out of many attempts, but
it didn't reappear on re-booting). However, Device
Manager shows the Adapter is installed and working
properly.

Netgear suggested I created a New User and tried re-
installing but this made no difference.

I have now installed an Ethernet Card. During
installation I got the same prompts for the missing files
(secur32.dll etc as above) and again I copied them from
the C drive. The installation of the hardware
finished "successfully" and Device Manager shows it as
installed and working correctly. It also shows up as
being connected to my Router. But I can't connect to the
Router via Internet Explorer. If I open Network
Neighbourhood it shows only 'Entire Network'. If I click
on 'Entire Network' it says "Unable to Browse Network".

Now everytime I open 'Network' in Control Panel(or right
click 'Network Neighbourhood' and then 'Properties') I
cannot see the Ethernet Card or Adapter. And then when I
click 'OK'it prompts to insert Windows 98 CD saying it
can't find secur32.dll; and in turn all the other files
mentioned above. If I direct it to copy files from C
drive the process finishes but nothing is installed and
the problem is still their. However, if I click 'Cancel'
this doesn't happen.

It seems to me that the problem all stems from not being
able to Browse the Network but I'm hoping this description
will indicate the problem amd its solution. I have not
had any problems with the computer, either hardware or
software in the 4 years I've had it.

With the Netgear adapter, the utility programme seemed to
flash up momentarily during the computer boot up. I tried
to control and set up the Adapter using Network
Neighbourhood but only "Entire Network" shows and clicking
on this gives "Unable to Browse Network".

Both the Adapter and PCI Card are compatible with my
computer and Windows 98SE.
Thanks in anticipation of someone being able to help.

To avoid incompatibilities you should have the router and
the wireless adapter made by the same manufacturer - and
have the latest drivers and any firmware from the
manufacturer's site installed.

Perhaps this site will be able to help you set up properly
and troubleshoot the problem:
