Default Typing Command in the Run box

If you type command in the Run box and then press the OK button,
it causes problems.
Anyone know why?
PS: I wouldnt't recommend anyone trying it just to find out, unless they're
willing to take a chance.

Default Typing Command in the Run box

It should not cause problems, it Should open a full screen DOS pane that can
be exited by typing exit, if yours does ok, if yours does not there is
something wrong on your pc,

start find files or folders named command
there should be a number of command.com files all the same size and date in
different folders, perhaps some command.pif likewise same date/size different
folders
there may be html xml wav or other files depending on whether you have themes,
ms.net or other applications installed

If there are any command.exe or if there are any command.com files of a
different size or date, you probably have a virus, a full scan with up-to-date
AV and spyware software is a good start

COMMAND.COM is the general MS-DOS utility.
When used under Win98 it should be in a DOS
box, which the MsDOS icon implements.

/ Start / Run
is designed to execute programmes (Windows
or DOS). It was not designed to enable the
general MS-DOS utility (COMMAND.COM.)

When I did it I got a blank (black) screen. Nothing.
When I hit escape, I got of flash of an error screem and then a DOS Window
with C:\Windows\Desktop.
Typying exit didn't work. Typing cd\ put it back to a blank screen and a
lockup.
I tried this earlier and don't know why unless it is related to my video
card drivers that cause a freeze while playing some DOS games.
When I finally get out by hitting the reset button, problems start. I then
shut totally down and wait awhile to let the drives stop spinning and boot
back into Windows.
Now, I can not double click on a .reg file and get it to work
(Registration Entries) ( program.exe cannot be found ).
Hopefully I will get it figured out.
Used up-to-date virus scan as well as Spybot and Adaware.
This all came about after trying to put command in the run box and
having the blank screen and lockup.

Piggybacking on AlmostBob (& he's a slippery one), a Find of "command.*"
shows three of them...

C:\Command.com 93,890 bytes
C:\Windows\Command.com 93,890 bytes
C:\Windows\Command.pif Shortcut

In "Properties, Screen tab", unbolt "Full-screen" for each of those. Can
that be it?

that 'program.exe' not found message is the remnants of one of many bugs, the
file association are screwed up which is an effect of one of the nasties I
have read about of late,
PCR Help,

Default Typing Command in the Run box

I was kicked off the NET just as I began to answer this. Now, one Apple
crumb cake & sundry other items later, uh... well, here is what I always
say for that...

If you have a bad association, then, for tough ones, might be wise to
seek a .reg at...
http://www.aumha.org/regfiles.htm or at...
http://home.satx.rr.com/badour/html/reg_files.html

For simple associations (just "open" I guess), you may...

(a) Highlight any file of that particular type
(b) Hold Shift & R-Clk it, to get "Open with...." again.
(c) Check the "Always open with..." box at botttom.
(d) Select the proper app from the window.

However, if you still don't know what to associate it with... To
disassociate it...

"START button, Settings, Folder Options, File Types tab".

Use the D-Arrow to slowly scroll the list, all the while looking for
that file type to appear at "Extension:". At long last, while it is
highlighted, click "Remove". If the extension is, for instance, ".xyz"
you may first quickly scroll the list & look for "XYZ File". Remove that
one.

But make no guesses. If you cannot remember what that file type
(extension) was, post back. Terhune will put you under hypnosis with a
mile-long dissertation--- & shock your memory!

I would certainly keep the one that is in "C:\Windows". Not sure how I
got the other. Perhaps it was "SYS C:" put it there. (Careful with that
command.) Perhaps it was always there.

In all 98 installs I see double.
I know that M$ link, thats why I think the one in the root should be
kept.
Well, maybe somebody else knows something on the subject.
