Default Format hard disk

How do I format my hard disk. I have tried right clicking
it and choosing "format". I get a dialogue box that tells
me that I can't format the disk because programs are in
use. I have tried using the (control)(Alt)(del) to shut
down all running programs. I still get the same dialogue
box. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Al

You need to use a boot floppy; a disk that is in use with the OS can not be
formatted. HTH.

You can't replace a doormat while you are still standing on it. Reboot the
system with your start diskette and from the dos prompt type format /?.

Isn't reformatting your hard drive being a bit drastic?
