Default Service packs and updates

Hi all,
I downloaded and installed a more recent version of IE =
(5.50.4807.2300IC) with lots of help and advice from you lot. According =
to microsoft update site, I need 19 critical updates/service packs-most =
to do with security, 43 win 98 and 98 SE updates, and 1 driver update =
(modem). One of the critical updates is a to with an IE 6 service pack =
? I don't want IE6, and I wouldn't of thought of it as critical! I'm =
suppose I should have some of these other updates and service packs but =
which ones?
All opinions welcome.

You can pick and choose the ones that sound most critical by their
descriptions. That's what I ended up doing - (I'm using IE 5.5 SP1 now).

general rule of thumb ...get drivers from the manufacturer of the product ,
not from microsoft.

you don't need to go to IE6 if you don't want to ....like Bill said , pick
and choose what you want

IE6 SP1 is listed as a critical update because IE5.5 is no longer supported, and
there are new security issues that are only fixed by upgrading the browser.
Obviously, it is your computer and you don't have to take IE6 SP1 if you don't want
to....just remove it from the group of updates to install.

The non-critical updates for Win98 do not have to be installed unless you need them
for their specific functionality. If you don't need them, after reading the extra
info links, don't install them.

I do *not* recommend installing ANY driver updates from Windows Update. Get your
driver updates ONLY from the manufacturer of the device in question.

Thanks once again guys, I just downloaded all the security updates, left =
all the others. No Glee, I would never download a driver from the =
microsoft update site, have read all to often in this group how it =
screws things up. I'm quite capable of screwing things up by myself =
without microsoft update help!
