Default Annoying 'Open with...' behaviour

My computer is a slow Pentium II 400 Mhz loaded with lots of programs. Any
time I purposely or accidentally click an odd-extension file it starts
seeking a suitable program to open it. IMHO this is unnecessary cause if a
program extension is not assigned it is because there is no program suitable
to run it OR it was simply not assigned. In my case this procedure is very
anonymous because my computer is slow and it takes almost half an hour to
search the whole system to finally open the "Open with" dialog box. In the
mean time everything slows down as hell.

Is it possible to disable the annoying "Open with" option to avoid this
behavior?

On my Pentium 2, 300MHz, with 32Mb ram and Win98 it didn't take long at
all. Since I upgraded to WinME and increased RAM to 256 Mb mine took ages
to load also. Nowhere near half an hour, but enough time to go pour a
coffee, lol.
So I changed the system default 'open with' to plain 'open' and have set my
notepad replacement (metapad) to do the opening. Now its instantaneous.

The easiest program I have found to do this with is Context Edit by Ziff-
Davis media. It was once published with PC Mag but is very hard to find now
that PC Mag is subscription only downloads. BUT .... it can be downloaded
from this link ......
http://www.ramlende.com/downloads/contextedit11.zip
182.56K, works brilliantly.
Hope that helps.

Slight correction ..... I replaced 'open with' for UNASSOCIATED file
extensions only, to 'open' using notepad.
