Bsd free OS.
Has anyone had dealings with free BSD?
http://www.freebsd.org/ http://www.ntlug.org/~cbbrowne/bsd.html It is a free base/build your own OS. I plan on trying it on a back drive and see if it works. Just wondering if anyone has heard about it or is useing it. BTW. Hope everyone has a MERRY CHRISTMAS !!! |

Yes I've got it installed on one of my drives. It's not for beginners though. If you are just starting out with unix-like operating systems you may want to give linux a try first...There are many distros that are pretty user-friendly. |

I plan on trying it on a back drive and see if it works. It for sure does. Just wondering if anyone has heard about it or is useing it. Try your ISP, good chances are that it IS one of *BSD's that gives you access to www. BTW. Hope everyone has a MERRY CHRISTMAS !!! Same to you. Stanislaw Slack user from Ulladulla. |

poatt had this to say: My reply is at the bottom of your sent message: Has anyone had dealings with free BSD? http://www.freebsd.org/ http://www.ntlug.org/~cbbrowne/bsd.html It is a free base/build your own OS. I plan on trying it on a back drive and see if it works. Just wondering if anyone has heard about it or is useing it. BTW. Hope everyone has a MERRY CHRISTMAS !!! Pay most attention to Philo's response. It's do-able but it's not something for a newbie or the easily discouraged. If you're interested in playing with a *NIX OS then a decent Mandriva (formerly Mandrake) should just about suit your needs. It installs as a decent build with a nice package set with many more options included on CD. One thing to consider is that it's configuration is pretty good for a home user though the help files aren't really as good as they could be in my opinion. A generic LINUX for Complete and Utter Newbies type book should get you well underway. Installing packages is a great deal easier. Sometimes I actually miss *NIX... (I'm a former Mandrake user with some forays into RH as well.) I'd avoid the bootable CD images you can download from various places. They tend to run slow from CD unless you install them. I've seen them eat MBRs for breakfast when a user made the lone mistake of doing something like opting to save modem settings. I really don't tend to think that those CDs really *should* be used by people unfamiliar with PCs at a technical level and people who aren't at least moderately fluent in *NIX. So, all in all, FreeBSD is nice but for a starting point there's Mandriva which I selected as my recommendation for it's ease of installation and configuration as well as it's package set at the default. -- Galen - MS MVP - Windows (Shell/User & IE) http://dts-l.org/ "My life is spent in one long effort to escape from the commonplaces of existence." - Sherlock Holmes |
