Ethernet problem with connection and boot-up
Just installed an Ethernet card. Followed instructions to the letter. But,
when the cable modem is plugged into the computer Windows 98 freezes during boot. If I leave the Ethernet cable unplugged, the computer boots just fine. But then, after plugging the cable back in, I'm not able to actually get connected to the Internet. Always receive back the same "Page not Found" message. I talked with the cable people and they had me try a few things. They found out that the Ethernet card and the connection to their server is good. Trouble is....I just cannot get to any web pages. Any ideas of what to try? The cable folks say that something is amiss with my computer. Well Duh! I've been reading these newsgroups for a while looking for some ideas of what to try but I hate to just start deleting various files without really having a plan of attack. Someone suggested elsewhere about deleting NIC 10/100 in Networking. I don't even know if I have that but it sounded like a problem similar to mine. This computer used to be connected to a cable modem via ComCast cable service in Michigan and they used a USB connection. Now, I'm in a totally different part of the country using a different cable company and trying to use an Ethernet cable. When Comcast installed stuff could they have tweaked some computer settings to "optimize" it so that it worked well with their settings but now something's are out of whack and won't work somewhere else? One last thing. I know the cable modem works as I've used it with my laptop just fine. In summary, the computer will not boot when the Ethernet cable is plugged into the computer - it freezes. The main problem is that I just can't get onto the Internet. Sorry to be so wordy but I though the more information the better. Thanks again. Art |

Start Run and enter Winipcfg. Select the Ethernet Card from the drop down menu and Release All then Renew All. It may help, it seems you are not accessing the ISP's DNS server although you have a connection. Regards, Bill Watt Computer Help and Information http://home.ptd.net/~bwatt/ |
