PA, I do have MS04-018 installed! I do not see that 887797 is offered to
me at Windows Update! I cannot find 'Custom Install', & it isn't in the
Windows Update Catalog that I can find!

I think PA was referring to XP because it offered me this update for XP
but not 98SE. The update was not considered critical so it will probably
not be offered for 98SE. (Ah, the convenience of dual-boot :)

Thanks, Dan. It is sad, then, that Bear would post this info in a Win98

[I knew this'd get you! wink]

According to your headers (Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2800.1437), you
have MS04-018 installed (cf.
http://groups-beta.google.com/group/...15f466850c8063).
This update fixed 'Mysterious Tilde File', you'll recall.

And this re-opens an old can of worms.

1. From MS04-018 (July-04):

quote
Are Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, or Windows Millennium Edition
critically affected by any of the vulnerabilities that are addressed in this
security bulletin?
No. None of these vulnerabilities are critical in severity on Windows 98, on
Windows 98 Second Edition, or on Windows Millennium Edition.
/quote

2. Despite the above, some Win9x users were offered MS04-018 at WU. Why?
Dunno.

3a. There was a time when the manual download page listed Win98, Win98SE and
WinME. They were recently removed.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

3b. Some Win9x users have successfully installed the above w/out problem.
**-I am /not/ advising anyone to do so!-**

4. MS04-018 would be listed as 'Outlook Express Q823353' in Add/Remove
Programs.

5. If you have MS04-018 installed, go to WU and scan for updates, then look
in left pane under 'Install optional software updates'.

6. I only posted this to Win98 groups because

(1) MS04-018 is a pre-requisite for installing 887797,

(2) some of you have MS04-018 installed, and

(3) WU /may/ offer it to some of you.

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=887797 makes no mention of OS, only:

quote
APPLIES TO
.. Microsoft Outlook Express 5.5 Service Pack 2
.. Microsoft Outlook Express 5.5
.. Microsoft Outlook Express 6.0
/quote

Yes, it's confusing.

Bear explains his views very well in his second post. My thought would
be that Microsoft would rather have everyone use XP and so is trying not
to make 98SE look too attractive. To Microsoft's credit they have been
clear on their support site that they will only address critical updates
and so maybe they changed their minds when it was determined that this
update was not critical -- only a guess -- who knows :

Well, it does seem he came up with possibly a logical explanation.
Still, with MS04-018, i.e. KB823353, definitively installed, I can find
no trace of 887797 at Windows Update, not even at "Windows 98 and
Windows 98 Second Edition (4)" in the left pane. Four items are there,
but not 887797. I'm afraid to look... have Bear's earlobes turned
purple? That would be the only definitive test of the issue, I fear.
But, thanks!

Not for me either, but I didn't do advanced search which is how you find
some of them such as MDAC updates. None of the issues in that KB article
