What is perhaps different is that it is still XP Home RTM, no patches, no service packs, no anti-virus, no anti-malware and with no firewall enabled. Of course it has just one purpose, to monitor 16 cameras, to detect motion and write data to disk and it has no internet connection. Similarly I know that some here use PCs running Win Me for document production and similar and never connect to the net. Others just use their machines for e-mail and browsing, activities that don't require fast modern and perhaps expensive hardware. Naturally those running Win Me, like those running other older unsupported operating systems such as Win98, 98SE and even NT4 and connecting to the internet need to take reasonable precautions to prevent their systems being compromised given that patches are no longer being made available for recently discovered vulnerabilities. -- Mike Maltby |

I understand all that, and XP home works fine. I used ME for 3 months, and
had to reinstall windows about 6 times. This same machine had 98se for some time, ran perfect, I then installed XP pro, and again, ran perfect. I run a computer repair shop, and we had zero successful Win ME computers work, we reverted back to 98se until it was gone, then made the jump to XP. None of our clients had ME for over 6 months because it was so horrible, even for single use. "Mike M" wrote: Robb Pierce wrote: Why do people still use Windows ME? Just upgrade to XP already. Why???
Well, my little computer expert who, btw, is using the MS interface to
post.......do you not have a news server?? Pity!! And you claim to be an expert?? Hmmm. So.....there are many of us on here who all met up eons ago when the choice was 98 or WinME. And we have been using WinME for at least 6 years. I went from 95 to WinME, so have no knowledge of 98. However, ME is still going behind me and considering the things I put it through, that is a miracle. Mike is the acknowledged Wizard with regard to computers and more particularly WinME. I am perhaps known for getting all of the really WEIRD problems with WinME, but guess what.....it sure was a learning experience. And not only that, I could offer my non-techy advice to those that also had the weird stuff. As in problems with a certain game site, and so on, LOL!! Don't underestimate WinME......often times it was the person at the keyboard.....not the operating system. And I never, ever had to take it into a repair person. The experts were here and still are. Heather PS.....I have a friend in Texas who ran a computer repair shop and she would write me for advice because they RARELY had a customer come in with WinME.....had more 98's, so it is just your opinion frankly. Why???
Am just getting aquainted with Vista, while still operating ME and to my
surprise discovered that ME is faster than Vista. All in all there is an advantage in ME, because one no longer needs to spend time downloading all sorts of updates. Vista has improved features and an advanced look but with dial-up it is quite a bit slower than ME, despite dual core processing. And not everyone can afford to 'upgrade' time and time again either. In short: consider yourself fortunate. Harry. "Robb Pierce" wrote in message ... Why do people still use Windows ME? Just upgrade to XP already. |

Mike M, is it true that for persons using old DOS programs ME was the
last windows opsys that would support the old 6.6 ms-dos? We run several older dos and win3.1 software packages for security system control updating and several old CCTV programing packages. The manufacturers of these packages all claim they will not update to XP or Vista because of the expense. win-ME is like any other opsys you just have to work within its limits and use the proper drivers.. We've been using win-ME since 1999 and the only problems we've ever had were op error.. RTS "Mike M" wrote in message ... Robb Pierce wrote: Why do people still use Windows ME? I run a computer repair shop, and we had
zero successful Win ME computers work, I regret to say this is more a comment about the people involved than the Win Me operating system since Win Me runs perfectly well on hardware of the time (1999-2002). None of our clients had ME for over 6 months because it was so horrible, even for single use. Again, this is more a comment on your clients than the Win Me operating system. -- Mike Maltby Robb Pierce wrote: I understand all that, and XP home works fine. Why???
Win Me was the start of the move away from DOS with limited or no support
for config.sys or autoexec.bat, NT based systems such as XP emulate DOS and don't allow the same hardware access of Win 98SE and earlier. Win Me is a bit of a half-way house in this respect. win-ME is like any other opsys you just have to work within its limits and use the proper drivers.. Never a truer word (or words) were spoken about Win Me than those. We've been using win-ME since 1999 and the only problems we've ever had were op error.. That sounds fair enough and supports my earlier comment that any problems with Win Me experienced by the OP were more a reflection of his abilities than the operating system. -- Mike Maltby RockyTSquirrel wrote: Mike M, is it true that for persons using old DOS programs ME was the last windows opsys that would support the old 6.6 ms-dos? From my own experience with ME, this is what I'd have written:
I used 98se for 3 months, and had to reinstall windows about 6 times. This same machine had ME for some time, ran perfect, I then installed XP Home, and again, ran perfect. I had zero successful 98se computers work and reverted back to ME until it was gone, then made the jump to XP. Harry,
Dialup and Vista make a strange combination. By the time your updates finishing updating, it's time for new updates. Don't worry though. When Microsoft discontinues support, there won't be any more waiting. -- I mastered Wordstar graphics!
