Default some desktop shortcuts stopped working

All of a sudden some of my desktop shortcuts (like google and hotmail) stopped working. Others (like I.E. and MS Outlook) continue to work. Even newly created shortcuts of hotmail e.g. don't work. Any suggestions what to do?
Thanks in advance, Gerhard

Download the .Lnk association fix file and see if that does it.

What happens when you click one of the shortcuts that don't work? R_Clk
one of them instead, select Properties, & post what it shows in "URL".
Perhaps, paste the URL into an Address Bar & hit ENTER. What happened?

I right clicked on the desktop creating an address bar and pasted the URL’s
http://www.google.com/
http://login.passport.net/uilogin.srf?id=2
in the command line & hit enter and nothing happened. Just like in the case of those nonworking shortcuts. Thanks, Gerhard

That first definitely works. As it doesn't work for you, EVEN PASTED to
the Address Bar, I'm thinking it isn't a shortcut problem. The
shortcut's job ends when the URL is delivered to an Address Bar, I
think. Are you getting an error message? A busy pointer? What?

(1) Perhaps...
"START, Run, MSInfo32, Tools menu, IE Repair Tool"
It produces a rather large "Fix IE Log.txt" in C:\Windows. IE & E
are basically one & the same. If this crashes, an over-install of IE is
indicated.

(2) Nevertheless, here is what I have in my Registry that corresponds to
Badour's fix. I believe it is a tad different. Do you know how to
compare this to yours...?...

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.lnk]

Oh! A HOSTS file can do that, if it's gone bad...!...

(a) "START, Settings, Folder Options, View tab".
Bolt "Show all files"; may as well uncheck "Hide file
extensions..." too.

(b) "START button, Find, F/F, HOSTS".
Do you have one in "C:\Windows" with just a name (HOSTS) & no file
type? Then, R-Clk & rename it to "Hosts.bad". Do URLs now work?
