Default "fot.tmp files

i just found over 12,000 files on my hard drive that are being put on it
a 4 a minute.
they all start with fot and end with.tmp. fot34f5.tmp, fot1k37.tmp
etc. they all say 0 bytes.
does anyone know what they are and how to prevent them?

thanks
