Can't Update Windows Me
I haven't been ignoring you; it's been almost a month since
I've had a chance to check this site. Thanks for your detailed and comprehensive answer. I will take it seriously and try these steps, as soon as I can work it in. Now that I'm back home, I'm spending most of my time on my desktop (the problem child is a notebook). I'll report back when I've tried some of your suggestions. -----Original Message----- I run Norton SystemWorks 2001, but it hasn't caused any problem up to now, so I've discounted it as a source of the problem. Sorry, NSW IS the problem . It has either filled or will fill the=20 WINDOWS\Inf folder with 1,000's of 0 byte OEM*.inf files or has/will=20 corrupted the System Restore hierarchy. Norton Antivirus will/has either=20 corrupted the software controls (ActiveX) for Windows Update or damaged=20 their installation. Check the Date and Time of your system to ensure that it is accurate. Open Internet Options via the Control Panel. On the first page, General,=20 click the Languages button. Make sure that a language has been chosen=20 for Internet Explorer. Now click the Connections tab, click the LAN Settings button. UNcheck=20 any of the boxes under Automatic Configuration that are checked. Now try Windows Update. If no joy, open the Windows Update.log found in=20 the WINDOWS folder with Notepad. Scroll down towards the bottom for the=20 most recent entries. Look for an error code(s) associated with the last=20 failed attempt to access Windows Update and then go here : http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/ Look for the error code you located in the log file under the " Problem reaching Windows Update " heading. Try the suggested resolutions. If you can not access the Troubleshooter page then either the MSXML=20 files are corrupted, not registered , or are not installed properly . quote Suggestion 1: Make sure the MSXML files are registered correctly by following the=20 steps below. NOTE: You may not have the files listed in Steps 2 and 3 installed on=20 your PC but please perform all 3 steps. If you don't have one of the=20 files, when you try to register it you will see a popup window that has=20 this text: LoadLibrary("filename.dll") failed - The specified file name could not=20 be found. Just disregard the error and continue to the next step. Follow these steps: 1. Click on Start, Run and type "REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MSXML.DLL"=20 (w/o the quotes). You should see a popup message that this process=20 succeeded. 2. Click on Start, Run and type "REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MSXML2.DLL"=20 (w/o the quotes). You should see a popup message that this process=20 succeeded. 3. Click on Start, Run and type "REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MSXML3.DLL"=20 (w/o the quotes). You should see a popup message that this process=20 succeeded. Now try the Windows Update site and see if you get the same error. Suggestion 2: This error can be the result of a file mismatch or corruption of the=20 MSXML.DLL files. Try upgrading your XML parser to the most recent=20 version, which is currently MSXML Parser 3.0 Service Pack 4 Release.=20 You can download the latest parser from this site: http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/de...ads/list/xmlg= eneral.asp /endquote If you still insist that NSW is not the cause of the issues that you are=20 experiencing perhaps someone else will assist you. Uninstall it and I=20 will continue to attempt to help you resolve this. MowGreen [MVP] *-343-* Never Forgotten Reggie wrote: I'm running ME on a Compaq 1800T laptop. Until recently, no problems. Then, due to a glitch that I don't understand, my IE 6.0 started locking up. One error report was transmitted to Microsoft, and I got a response that a Win update would correct the problem. Any attempt to do a Win update also freezes the system. I tried reinstalling IE 6, forcing it to overwrite existing files, but part way through, that also froze. I downloaded Netscape 7.1, and that works fine, but still can't update windows, for it only works through IE, and every time, it goes to the routine to scan my computer for applicable updates, then freezes. I'm hoping that a successful Win update would also allow me to clear the IE 6 problem =20 I run Norton SystemWorks 2001, but it hasn't caused any problem up to now, so I've discounted it as a source of the problem. =20 Any ideas? I'm out...and highly frustrated. . |

Can't Update Windows Me
I have tried all the suggestions in your latest message,
with no success. I did get one error message, when I tried to re-register "REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MSXML2.DLL" I did not get the exact error message you suggested. It said that Load library failed. LastError returns 0x00000485.=20 Should I try anything else at this point? None of the other suggestions failed or caused any problem. Thanks again for any help.
