Default I cannot access the Internet in 98SE anymore

Well, I can no longer access the Internet in Microsoft Windows 98 Second
Edition. Everything is okay now in Windows XP Professional and the CPU 100%
cycle is much less since I worked with a Microsoft Support Representative on
getting the latest supported drivers for the XP Pro. side of my computer. I
need everyones help on connecting to the Internet in 98SE again. The device
manager has zero errors. I tried to get on the Internet without having Zone
Alarm enabled and no joy. I notice in the Zone Alarm Professional settings
that it has my IP address there and recognizes it. Everything else in 98SE
is running well. I have tried Gary S. Terhune's Clean Boot procedure to get
rid of clutter and although it is running even more smoothly now I still
cannot get on the Internet. It is weird how it started in 98SE with not
being able to access one web site and now goes to zero Internet access. I
can contact Comcast about it but would like to get it up and running with
your guys help and I greatly appreciate all the wisdom, knowledge and
expertise of this group which has helped me to learn so much. Thanks guys
and gals and have a great weekend.

Probably abit chancy in this day and age. I always made the internet
connection with IE's setup first, immediately disconnected. Then installed
ZA. Probably smarter to hide behind a router during initial connection with
the internet.

XP Pro. ia behind Zone Alarm Professional on the same machine and is not
having issues connecting to the Internet. The 100% CPU cycle is not entirely
fixed but at least it does not hang for as long at the 100% level with the
newer driver. So Johnny, do you think unistalling Zone Alarm Professional in
the 98SE side would allow me to connect to the Internet on that side of the
machine? Windows Vista is super fast when connecting to the Internet and so
far I have not experienced any time outs with Vista on the Internet like at
some points with 98SE and XP Pro.

Are you getting particular error messages when you try to connect? Can you send and
receive email or instant messages but just not connect with your web browser, or are
all connections broken?

I've seen the problem where the Internet connection will fail but email and IM
works, and completely uninstalling Zone Alarm was required.....not just from
Add\Remove but also manually cleaning up after the uninstall. Before you uninstall
anything though, answer the questions I asked above.

This procedure is a good start:
http://www.donhoover.net/uninstall.html
but sometimes a more vigorous approach is needed:
http://nh2.nohold.net/noHoldCust25/P...tallNonNT.html

After uninstalling and before reinstalling ZA, go here and make sure Win98 has the
latest root certificates....if not, you will see a pop-up to update:

Thanks for the suggestions, Glen. I appreciate them. I will try them out
and hopefully, I can be connected again on the 98SE side with the Internet
and being able to access the newsgroups with Thunderbird from there. Ugh, I
don't know how people can stand to use the web interface for too long.

Success and thank you very much Glen. After removing Zone Alarm
Professional then I was able to use the ipconfig address utility and
restore my connection. I had to release all then renew all. The
release all worked but the renew all did not. I then tried to renew
them individually and I was able to renew my main connection. My
secondary connection was not fully restored but I did not have the
Ethernet cable attached to this connection so I think this is the
reason. This group is awesome!!!

I actually used Windows Help for this:

To use the IP configuration (WINIPCFG) utility

Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type:
winipcfg
Click More Info.
To see the addresses of the DNS servers the computer is configured to use, click the ellipsis (...)

button to the right of DNS Servers.
To see address information for your network adapter(s), select an adapter from the list in

Ethernet Adapter Information.
Notes

The IP Configuration utility allows users or adminstrators to see the current IP address and other useful information

about your network configuration.
You can reset one or more IP addresses. The Release or Renew buttons respectively release or renew one IP address.

If you want to release or renew all IP addresses click Release All or
Renew All.
When one of these buttons is clicked, a new IP address is obtained from either the DHCP service or from the

computer assigning itself an automatic private IP address. For more
information, see Related Topics.

For information about assigning a simple IP address, see Related Topics.

OK. I see. It was something about Zone Alarm. Glee has cured a bundle of
folk with that! Glad you are back, then. Maybe switch to Kerio...

Suggested to me by Dundat, this little app is the cat's meow of
Firewalls. Well, it's the only I've ever tried, but it seems to have it
all & hasn't crashed yet. Free for personal use.

http://www.321download.com/LastFreew...nal%20Firewall
That also is it.

It's really usable out of the box, once said Glee. BUT...

This site will show you every last little thing you can do with it.
Don't get confused with all the possibilities, though.

Naturally, you will not sue,

Oh. But you couldn't do that w/o uninstalling ZoneAlarm? Do you need to

has?

ZoneAlarm has not yet been reinstalled. I will post back more on this
topic when I have the time. Take Care, PCR and I am staying fairly busy
at work.
