Icon - can't change target/icon
Recently I had to rebuild my computer because of spyware.
It is W98 The problem: If you right click on some of my desktop icons, under the "shortcut" tab, there is nothing change. You can't change the target or icon, nothing, it's 'blanked' out. The Icons I can't change a Microsoft Office Icons, and a Word Perfect11 one. All the other icons I have on my desktop, Spysweeper, Webshot, Juno, FreeCell, Internet Explorer, WinFile I can change icons or change the target or 'start in'. What I want to do is change the "start in" for my Excel. It worked the first day, then it 'reverted' to starting in XLS Startup..... Not one person I asked had ever heard of the shortcut tab's information not being able to be changed. Please email me at the above email, because with all the postings, I'm not sure if I'll be able to find this one again. Right now the only thing I can think of is to reinstall the programs. If anyone has a better idea, please let me know. Thanks |

Hi Debi,
Sorry no email support. Have you tried creating a new shortcut? -- Regards, Bert Kinney [MS-MVP DTS] http://dts-l.org/ How to Configure Outlook Express for Internet News: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=171164 "Debi" wrote Recently I had to rebuild my computer because of spyware. I included an email reply here, but please respond to the newsgroup if at all
possible. Those "shortcuts" you mention for MS Office and WP suites aren't normal shortcuts. They're much more complicated than the usual LNK file shortcuts. More like "My Computer", "Recycle Bin", "My Documents", "Internet Explorer", etc., created using special "namespace" entries in the Registry. While I imagine there are some Registry tweaks that can be done to change the default locations for apps you launch using these "namespace" shortcuts, the easier thing to do would be to create a few plain LNK shortcuts to the particular apps. Name them appropriately, perhaps not just Excel, but for the particular Excel project you want to work on, and setting the "Open in" value to the storage folder for that particular project. -- Gary S.
