Default running a portable external HD with WIN98SE

I'd like some advice, please.

I've a Pentium 3, with 512meg RAM and WIN98SE. I want to buy a
portable hard drive, and this one looked good value:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Toshiba-250G...75189&sr =8-2

The thing is, though, will I be able to run it on my machine? I
recently installed some generic drivers, and can now rip cd's to a
fairly recent Sony MP3 player because of this, so will these drivers
have enabled me to use a hard disc drive like this one? And if not,
will there be a 'patch' I can download to make this happen?

Thanks in advance.

Windows 98 SE has the necessary drivers 'built-in' and *should*
'plug-n'-play' this device without any trouble.

However, although advertised as USB 2.0, it will only work at USB 1.1 speeds
(due to the Win98SE driver - and Mobo hardware) so don't expect lightening
transfer speeds!. To go down the USB 2.0 route, you'd need extra hardware
(e.g. PCI-USB 2.0 card & associated drivers - normally supplied with the
card)

BTW - Price seems about right too.

Not necessarily. Unlike Windows XP and Vista, Win98 does not have a
generic driver for mass storage devices. The official rule is that you
have to install a driver for each device. That driver comes from the
manufacturer, and with Win98 fading into the distance not many of them
bother with drivers for it any more.

Maybe. Many people have reported lots of success with this kind of
thing, but you won't know until you try.

And if not,
will there be a 'patch' I can download to make this happen?

Not likely, but you never know.

Make sure you have USB 2 or it will be too slow to be practical. You would
most likely have to install a PCI USB2 card which can ususally be acquired
for well under $20 US.

You would probably need the Maximus Decimus NUSB driver found he
http://www.mdgx.com/
I have a WD My Book 320 GB and it works fine. I had to use the
"explore" right click command on it until I renamed the .ini file that
wanted to load up drivers and other software. The 1.1 USB speed is
not that bad IMHO.

A lot depends on the specifications of the USB on this windows 98
machine. It may only support USB 1.0 while the drive you mentioned seems
to indicate that it requires USB 2.0.

You may be as well off looking for an older drive or at least
investigate whether the one you choose is compatible. As far as your
choice is concerned I do not believe that Toshiba drives are
particularly well rated. In fact, Toshiba rarely uses them in their own
laptops.
