Default Win Updates minor problem

On my main computer I keep getting Update messages. It's always a security
update.

OE 6 SP 1 KB837009

It's been installed numerous times but everyday up pops the message. I
usually just close it but occasionally go to Windows Update, and there it is
waiting to be installed.

My two test computers have no record of KB837009.

Any ideas as to how to stop getting the message?

Galen

PA Bear is the legit expert on this. Maybe wait for him, BUT...

It could be these three needed to come in, in the following sequence...
(a) Q330994
(b) Q837009
(c) Q823353 (This is 3rd, but no longer offered at Windows Update.)

And, "Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Install/Uninstall tab" for me
shows...
Outlook Express Q823353
....but it was Outlook Express Q837009
....& before that Outlook Express Q330994.
....I never took Outlook Express Q887797, which also could be involved.

Do you have any of the three/four? Then, uninstall whichever is in
there, & go see what happens at Windows Update. Hopefully, it offers Q837009 to you one last time.

I have Q823353 but I get "there was an error trying to uninstall this patch"
so it's still showing.

Hmm. I don't know what would happen, if I click to uninstall mine. (But I'm not constantly offered any at Windows Update.) Here is the Registry key involved when you click to uninstall Q823353...

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Uninstall\oeupdate]
"DisplayName"="Outlook Express Q823353"
"QuietDisplayName"="Outlook Express Q823353"
"UninstallString"="C:\\WINDOWS\\oeuninst.exe C:\\WINDOWS\\INF\\Q823353.inf"
"RequiresIESysFile"="6.0.2800.1106"
"QuietUninstallString"="C:\\WINDOWS\\oeuninst. exe /d C:\\WINDOWS\\INF\\Q823353.inf"

....Does yours look like mine? Do you have..?.. C:\WINDOWS\INF\Q823353.inf.
Here are two other Registry keys...

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{f5173cf0-1dfb-4978-8e50-a90169ee7ca9}]

And here is my only key mentioning Q837009...

"Version"="6,0,2800,1409"
"ComponentID"="Q837009"

Can it be you need only to add the last? Well, actually there is mention of both updates in this key too...

Default Win Updates minor problem

I checked registry and have the same entries for the Q823353 with an
exception.
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Advanced INF Setup\oeupdate]
"BackupRegPathName"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\UNINST~1\\OEUPD ATE\\AINF0002"
"InstallINFFile"="c:\\windows\\TEMP\\IXP000.TMP\\Q 823353_d.inf"

Those two items are not listed and Q823353_d.inf is non-existant.

Found no entries for Q837009

the IE,Help,About and the registry only show Q313829, Q912812, Q918439 and Q
916281

From a suggestion in a different message, I turned off the Task Manager.
Hopefully that will stop the Update messages.

Clear History, delete Cookies and delete Temporary Internet Files (including offline files) via IE: Tools Options General, then...

1. Download the Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express 6 Service Pack 1 (KB837009; all OSS) from the following link, saving it to your Desktop:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...6-EDE1C73F97B5

[ Optional: 2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode. (During the reboot, keep pressing the F8 key until the Windows Startup menu appears Choose Safe Mode Enter.) ]

3. Rename the downloaded file to KB837009.EXE and copy it to C:\ (the root directory of drive C; assumes drive C is the boot drive)

4. Start Run (type in) C:\KB837009.EXE /N:V (Note the spaces) press ENTER

5. Close the command window.

6. Reboot [into Windows] and check in at Windows Update to see if the problem persists.

On my main computer I keep getting Update messages. It's always a security
update.

OE 6 SP 1 KB837009

It's been installed numerous times but everyday up pops the message. I
usually just close it but occasionally go to Windows Update, and there it
is waiting to be installed.

My two test computers have no record of KB837009.

Any ideas as to how to stop getting the message?

Galen
