How do I print to TCPIP connected printer from Win98?

I also have an NT4 and 3 Win98 machines connected to the switch. Previously the printer was connected to one of the win98 machines via its parallel port and was shared such that any machine could print to it. As a learning exercise I wanted to connect the printer to the network via its ethernet port rather than its parallel port. I was able to print to the N17 from the NT4 machine by adding TCPIP Print services and then adding the printer via the add printer wizard. However, when I try to add the printer to the Win98 machines I am not able to see the printer when trying to add a network printer through the add printer wizard. I am no doubt doing something wrong and probably haven't added the proper protocol/service or whatever to the Win98 machines but file and printer sharing as well as the TCPIP protocol is on the machines - is that all I should need to see the printer when it is connected to the switch via ethernet? Where can I go to find out what I need to do to add a TCPIP connected printer to a win98 machine? Or, am I completely out in left field by wanting to connect the printer to the switch and have the NT4 and Win98 machines talk directly to it via it's TCPIP connection. thanks for any help anyone might be able to provide. To the best of my knowledge, Win98 doesn't have support for connecting directly to a TCP/IP printer like NT4 does. There might be software available from Xerox (perhaps the printer driver program or a utility program) to create a port on Win98 that connects to the networked printer. This site might point you in the right direction: http://www.office.xerox.com/cgi-bin/DriverD.pl I've had good luck sharing a LAN-connected printer via the LPR print protocol in a w/98-NT-w2k-XP-Unix environemnt. (This is one of the choices on every business-grade printer I've ever seen. A printer can listen for LPR and other protocol simultaneously .) LPR client was an option on NT and w2k machines. It's built-in on XP. For w/98 we had to install HP Jetadmin software. It was free. You might be able to find it on the HP support site, or ask you printer vendor for an equivalant. -- Al Dykes ----------- adykes at p a n i x . c o m |
