Default false modem

Windows Update would not install new updates, so I had to
completely reinstall win98se. The setup would not
function properly so I had to del the whole Windows
folder in dos. After a successful install, the problem
is that win98 falsely detects that I have a modem when it
is in fact a network card. Now I cannot connect to the
internet because windows continuously tries to setup the
modem instead of allowing me to connect to the internet.

How is W98 detecting this--have you looked in device manager to see what is
listed? Do you even have an analog modem in your PC?

I don't know how. I don't have any modem, just 1 network
card. I removed every trace of the modem profiles but
the Internet Connection Wizard still wants to set up a
modem. I'm wondering if there is some sort of registry
fix that will change it's state.

Control panel, system, device manager. That is how you see what hardware is
installed and if there are any problems with it.

How are you connecting to the internet--via cable or DSL modem? If so, the
IC wizard gives you a choice between a phone line connection and local area
net (LAN)--choose the LAN.
