I'll load a new copy and see what happens. I was consistently getting that
behavior testing on an XP machine, but it didn't happen on the others, so I
figured it was OK. Back to the DB...

Might just do it in VBS and people will just have to enable it or go
somewhere else... Or offer both, with the caveat that you have to manually
close the command prompt... Dunno...

I was more looking for proofing of the written content, Vic, but also
feedback from testing. On all the systems I tested on, Win98SE, Win2K and
even WinXP, the command windows closed automatically. If it's not doing
it
for you, I'll have to add back a couple of commands I thought were
superfluous. I'll let you know when they're updated, and if you'd like to
email me at gryst_at_grystmill.com, I'll be sure to notify you directly.

Any system you can test it on for me would be great. I'm handicapped by
not
being at my own machine(s) lately, borrowing a very slow XP machine. VPC
runs like snail snot, and I haven't had the time to install 95 or ME, nor
yet found my copies of NT4.

Gary, what kin of input are you looking for. I an the EXE on Win98SE all
went well so far as I can tell. IT would be nice to have the DOS window
close automatically, and of course not have 'file not found' messages
(perhaps NUL them out) but, once again, all looks well.

REG backup is in G:\WINDOWS where it should be. I reset timezone as in
your documentation, set time via internet (no anomalies) so what else
would you like to know?

Vic

BTW: thanks for the patch!
Also have Win95C if you would like the EXE checked there too

I see you have included the .pif in the package. Without it in the same
folder as the .bat, the .bat will revert to UNCHECKED in its
"Properties, Programs tab, Close on Exit".

Can it be Vic & Brian A. in their machinations separated the .pif from
the .bat? It works for me when they are together to close the DOS
window.

(But I denuded the .bat & did not get the Registry keys or 100 backup
files!)

I took it in last night... TZ_UP_9x.exe. Opening it in WinZip, I see...

Readme.txt
TZ_UP.bat
Tz_up.pif
TZWIN9x.reg

Although the "Properties, Program tab, Cmd Line box" shows...
C:\WINDOWS\DESKTOP\TZ_9X_UP\TZ_UP.BAT
...., it works just fine with it & the .bat both in C:\Windows\Temp.

BUT, if that .pif is moved away or deleted, the .bat will REVERT to
UNCHECKED in its own "Properties, Program tab, Close on Exit box".

Let me add the .pif will work to make the .bat close on exit, IF...

(a) It is in the same folder as the .bat, or

(b) It is in...
C:\Windows
C:\Windows\System
C:\Windows\PIF

(c) Cquirke or Blanton may know more, such as perhaps the .pif may be
anywhere in the PATH to be effective, or maybe there's another special
folder or two.

HOWEVER, the .pif itself only will work to execute the .bat, if the .bat
is in the folder mentioned in the .pif's Command Line box, I'm fairly
sure. Anyhow, it doesn't appear to go on a Target hunt!

Default UPDATE Time Zone Update -- NEW AND IMPROVED!!

Hi Gary, FINALLY got a chance to get back to this NG. Time has had me
buried with things to do the past couple of weeks. Wanted to follow-up
on
my post. Two items were mentioned regarding the installation program:

1. 'file not found' messages
2. IT would be nice to have the DOS window close automatically

Downloaded the install program this morning (was not sure if you have
made changes since my first post. Installed it, here are the results:

1. file not found messages still there (no big deal)
2. DOS windows does close and I think I discovered why it did not close
the first time!
After the install a README file appears. Noticed the DOS window was
still there and said well, the DOS window still does not close BUT,
recalling 1st install, I manually closed DOS box then read the readme
and closed it. THIS time I closed the readme FIRST and voila, the DOS
window closed automatically.

Also tried program (patch) in Win95c (OSR2.5) and it works the same as
in 98se. Readme must be closed for DOS box to close. One other note
which may be of interest, noticed on Win95 the original TZ_BAK.REG was
19KB in size while the 2nd backup (TZ_BAK.001 __ I tried your program
twice in Win95) was 31KB, quite a difference in size. Are you aware of
this and know why the original is sooo much smaller than the patch?

Didn't think to look at REG sizes in 98 so cannot comment on that.

Gary, what kin of input are you looking for. I an the EXE on Win98SE

all
went well so far as I can tell. IT would be nice to have the DOS

window
close automatically, and of course not have 'file not found' messages
(perhaps NUL them out) but, once again, all looks well.

REG backup is in G:\WINDOWS where it should be. I reset timezone as in
your documentation, set time via internet (no anomalies) so what else
would you like to know?

Vic

BTW: thanks for the patch!
Also have Win95C if you would like the EXE checked there too

They're now EXE files (self-executing WinZip.)

I would DEARLY love to have someone(s) proof these before I start
advertising beyond his group. Especially the web pages and the

Readme.txt.
Gotta be in the next couple of days, though.

Default UPDATE Time Zone Update -- NEW AND IMPROVED!!

Weird that someone would see the DOS window *while* the Readme.txt file was
open, since it's set to open Maximized, g.

Can't do anything about the file not found messages, at least not in this
incarnation. Not while keeping backups of backups. Leastways, if it can be
done, I don't know how. But I'm writing a VBS script that will do it all
much more elegantly. Won't even need to open/change/change-back/close the
Time/Date applet.

Hi Gary, FINALLY got a chance to get back to this NG. Time has had me

Can't do anything about the DOS File Not Found messages. It's part of the
backup routine I stuck in there.
