ad-aware install error
I was checking this group out to find help with some
problems I'm having, and found at least two people,i.e. ~robear dyer and ron martell, advocating ad-aware to detect many different types of hijackware. I thought they would like to know that I couldn't install ad-aware because of a corrupt installation file. I found another (free) program, called Bazooka Spyware Scanner, at www.majorgeeks.com, that seems to work... Though it hasn't solved my low resources or other headaches. I'll keep looking, but if I can't find my problem already solved here somewhere, I'll ask for help; I'm impressed with the group. Harriet (hlr) |

ad-aware install error
If you get a corrupt installation file, delete it and download it again...if need
be, from a different site. It is available from Major Geeks: http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=506 The best procedure for spyware removal is: Update your anti-virus app and then run a full-system virus scan. Use CWShredder, the CoolWeb removal tool, available he http://computercops.biz/downloads-cat-14.html http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads31.html http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads...CWShredder.exe http://aumha.org/downloads/cwshredder.zip In addition, install Ad-Aware 6 free edition, start it, click its 'Check for Updates' link in the app to install updates, then use it to scan your system, and remove what it finds. Ad-Awa http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/ Install, update and run SpyBot Search & Destroy, scan your system, and then remove the items in RED only. SpyBot S&D: http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=download Download, unzip, and run Hijack This from one of these locations: http://computercops.biz/downloads-cat-14.html http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads31.html http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads...HijackThis.exe Unzip to a folder other than your Desktop or the Temp folder, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan". When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button. Press that, save the log somewhere you can find it (Desktop, My Documents, or similar). Most of what it lists will be harmless or even required, so do NOT fix anything yet. Copy the log files and paste them into a new post at one of these forums: http://forum.aumha.org/ http://forums.net-integration.net/ http://computercops.biz/forums.html http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showforum=30 http://tomcoyote.org/forums/ http://www.lavasoftsupport.com http://boards.cexx.org/ The folks there will tell you what to remove. -----Original Message----- If you get a corrupt installation file, delete it and download it again...if need -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP W95/98 Systems http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm Wow, I didn't really expect a reply, especially such a long and detailed one; Thank-you, Glen. My first thought was that I might have a virus or hijackware - that's why I was reading this newsgroup. I thought I had covered that with a new (free) program, AntiVir, and (free) spyware, Bazooka, from MajorGeeks. I was starting to check my system for software that may be misbehaving. Since you gave such a list of spyware and help sites, however, I assume you weren't too impressed with my choice of spyware. If you think I might still have something hiding in my system, I'll try your more drastic measures. When I boot up, I have only about 83% resources, and that's up from about 63% before I started working on it, but it still seems low to me. Also, something keeps accessing my HD every second or so. One program seemed to be Stimon (still image monitor), whose log showed endless failures,(and it was starting at boot). I took it out of the startup with msconfig, which, along with other cleanups, helped startups, but I still get the HD light blinking about every second. It drives me crazy, and I'm sure it's not good for my system. ... Thanks again, Harriet |

I am sure the apps you chose work fine, but I have seen proven success with the ones
I recommended, so that is what I continue to recommend. 83% free resources at startup is quite good....dunno why you think it is low. After you are finished with Bazooka or whatever you choose to run, I strongly suggest you post a Hijack This log on one of the forums I linked in my previous reply. As for your startups and what may be causing your constant disk access, follow the directions in the Hijack This tutorial to also generate a Startup List log, and copy/paste that into your next reply here. The tutorial I referred to previously: http://tomcoyote.com/hjt/ Also have a look he Clean up your startup group: http://www.westelcom.com/users/rogersr/clean.htm Startup Programs Loading: http://aumha.org/a/loads.htm Start-ups: http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.htm Task List Programs: http://www.answersthatwork.com/Taskl...s/tasklist.htm StartUps: http://www2.whidbey.com/djdenham/Uncheck.htm StartUp List: http://www.3feetunder.com/krick/startup/list.html Windows Startup Online Repository: http://www.windowsstartup.com/wso/search.php -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP W95/98 Systems http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm wrote in message ... -----Original Message----- If you get a corrupt installation file, delete it and download it again...if need -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP W95/98 Systems http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm Wow, I didn't really expect a reply, especially such a long and detailed one; Thank-you, Glen. glen;
Thanks, again. I'll check out your suggestions. It sounds as though it may take a while, though, so I'll probably be starting a new thread with my next post... As for resources, I thought that a starting number should be more like 95%. I use Photoshop and Illustrator, among other resource hogs, I need lots of them. Memory too; one of the things I downloaded recently is something called RAM Idle, which is supposed to free up ram as you work. I have 512MB of RAM, and when I boot up I show that I only have about 360 something free. Now, online, with this message box and the newsgroup webpage up, it's down to 256. According to what I read in the program, if I read it correctly, having half your installed RAM available for use is *good*. This is news to me, and I'm suspicious because it *is* news, i.e., why haven't I heard it somewhere before... Anyway, thanks again - I'll check this thread once more to see if you've answered, because I've gone on a lot more than I intended. ...Harriet -----Original Message----- I am sure the apps you chose work fine, but I have seen proven success with the ones I recommended, so that is what I continue to recommend. 83% free resources at startup is quite good....dunno why you think it is low. |

Get rid of RAM Idle. So-called RAM-freeing programs are hogwash.
RAM is supposed to be used....if it is sitting free, why have it in the first place. Windows memory management uses the RAM for whatever processes it can while it is not otherwise used, and frees it dynamically when needed by an app. Read he http://www.aumha.org/win4/a/memmgmt.htm especially the section headed: The Advantages of More RAM: http://www.aumha.org/win4/a/memmgmt.php#ram -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP W95/98 Systems http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "hlr" wrote in message ... glen; Thanks, again. I kept my Bazooka, because the SpyBot was 4.2MB, it's 2:10AM here, and I have a dial-up connection. I read a lot about the startup cleaning procedures, too, but didn't do anything with that yet. My HD light continues to blink. I know I said I would start a new thread, but I'll see if you respond, first. So then, what should I call it - ad- aware install prob II? I was able to install the new ad- aware download fine, by the way. The file even had a different name. Thanks for all your time. I'm really overwhelmed with all the help that people are willing to give for free, or freewill donation. ... Harriet |

glen:
I found a kb article, KB138598, called "Disk Drive or CD- ROM Access Light Blinks Every Few Seconds" The blinking is normal. I posted a message with the info in case others are having the same problem, but I wanted to post it here, too, since I mentioned that the light was still blinking in my last post here. ....
