constant "work offline" messages; and can't delete files
Whenever I turn on my computer, before it even fully boots
up, I am getting a message saying "work offline. No connection to the Internet is currently available. to view Internet content that has been saved on your computer, click work offline." This "work offline" message keeps popping up every few seconds or minutes, no matter how many times I delete it. Obviously, some program is trying to dial into the internet whenever I have my computer on. How can I find out what the program is and how can I delete it? It's probably some sort of adware, but I've run adaware and it has deleted regkeys and files, but then as soon as I reboot, the same regkeys keep popping up, and there are two files that it can't delete and I can't manually delete. They a C:\windows\system\sfrapi.dll (when try to delete that one manually, I get a message saying "cannot deleted SfRAPI; the specified file is being used by Windows." The other is c:\windows\system\cqgwiz.dll. When I try deleting that file manually, I get a message saying "cannot delete CqGWIZ: access denied Make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that the file is not currently in use." Please help! Thank you |

In IE6, click on Tools/Options/Connections, and make sure that the "Never
Dial..." radio button is depressed. Of course, this is assuming that you are NOT using a dial-up connection! Dave "Emily" wrote in message ... Thanks for your reply. Yes, I use good ol' dial-up, and yes, that button was already checked. And I think that's why I was getting the message -- some application was trying to connect to the internet, probably to show me pop-up ads, and because I have my system set (in several areas) that it requires me to actually dial in, I was getting that "work offline" message. But....the good news is that I found the answer to my question on another site, and it was pretty complicated to do, but I am going to post the instructions here in case anyone searching for this problem in the future sees this posting. Here are the instructions I found and followed that solved the problem. I'm not sure if the rules for this forum allow the posting of the website, but it was at annoyances.org that I found this solution: "Symptoms: When you attempt to use Microsoft Internet Explorer to browse the Internet, you may receive the following error message: No connection to the Internet is currently available. and you are unable to browse the Internet. Cause: This behavior can occur if there is an improper setting in your system registry. Resolution: To resolve this issue, follow these steps: -Start Internet Explorer. -On the Tools menu, click Options. -On the General tab, click Delete Cookies under Temporary Internet files. -Click Delete Files, and then click OK in the Delete Files message box. -Under History, click Clear History, and then click Yes to the "Are you sure you want Windows to delete your history of visited Web sites?" message. -Click OK to close the Internet Options dialog box, and then quit Internet Explorer. -Click Start, and then click Run. -In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK. WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Use Registry Editor at your own risk. -Navigate to the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Webcheck In the right pane, verify that the following values are set to auto: LoadLCE LoadSens If these values are not set to auto, follow these steps: In the right pane, click LoadLCE, and then on the Edit menu, click String. It is well and good that you have stopped the prompt from appearing, but I would be
very concerned about what is trying to dial out in the first place. I cannot find a reference to either of the files you mentioned in the error messages, which would prompt me to investigate. Update your anti-virus app and then run a full-system virus scan. Glad you found that information!
From time to time, when checking other friends and relatives systems, I still find files such as "dialer.exe" and "dialler.exe" in their root directories ("C\:"folder) which are "nasties" that should be deleted by running one of the programs mentioned by Glee's post , i.e., SpyBot, or Ad-Aware. This malware can sit on a system for years, as someone has switched to cable or DSL, then, when they least suspect it, they need to revert to dial-up, and 'Poof!", they receive a hefty phone bill from one of these programs dialling a toll number!
