Default Low memory warning on running excel

Hi

For the last few days when starting Excel 2000 on my Win 89 pc, I run low on memory ( 256 Mbytes) for some reason.
I cannot open an Excel file, run another application or indeed close down Excel. The only way to clear the fault is to manually press the reset button. Shutting down properly or pressing CTR+ALT+DEL does not work.
I have tested for viruses and spyware with Norton Antivirus and Webroot Spy Sweeper but all was in order. I tested the memory blocks and again they were found not faulty.
I did nor recently install any new software

Any ideas how to fault find what is highjacking the memory?

Thanks
Pavlos
