Error Msg: "Cannot add the Staff View musical symbol font."

I used to run Cakewalk 3.0 music sequencing software on my old 446 machine
running Windows 95.

I now have it installed on my Celeron PC running on Windows XP. It works
just fine there too.

In betweeen, I installed it on a Pentium II (or was it III?) machine running
Windows 98. It worked fine there too.

Here's the problem: I recently tried to install Cakewalk on my OFFICE
computer, which still runs on Windows 98. It installed all right. But when I
launched the program I got this error msg: "Cannot add the Staff View musical
symbol font."

I'm not sure what that error means, but I can sure see the results.

On the screen, in all the places where I would expect to see music symbols
(notes, rests, time signatures, etc.) I get goofy symbols (squares, diamonds,
scissors, etc.).

I tried reinstalling the software. Same results.

I tried installing the software on another office machine also running on
Windows 98. Same results.

Thinking the program disk might have been corrupted, I made a copy of the
software from my working machine at home and tried installing it. Same
results.

No music. Just "ERROR: Cannot add the Staff View musical symbol font."

Here's what is maddening: Cakewalk worked just fine an MY old Windows 98
machine.

Here's the difference (I think): When I got my Windows 98 machine I copied
the ENTIRE hard drive from my old Windows 95 machine to my then-new Windows
98 machine. I didn't re-install any of the software.

I figure some file, some patch, some SOMETHING came over in the transfer ...
something that is needed so that Cakewalk CAN add the Staff View Musical
symbol font.

In case it helps, I believe I have correctly identified the file which
contains the musical symbol font. It's called "TTSNOTE.TTR" [and it's
accompanied by files called "TTSNOTE.FOR" and "TTSSEQ.INI" and "TTSSEQ40dll"
-- I'm not sure what they do].

What could I add, delete or change on the Windows 98 machine at work so that
it WILL add the Staff View musical symbol font? so that I see notes, rests,
time signatures, etc. instead of squares, diamonds, and scissors?

Presuming you are authorized to do this & before MEB places you under
arrest...

(1) Does the Font folder work...?...

(a) "START button, Settings, Control Panel, Fonts"
(b) In the File menu, is the item "Install New Font" lit
& apparently usable?
(c) How many fonts are in the folder?
(There is a limit of about 800. I have only 116.)

(2) Does the folder have the System attribute...?...

(a) "START button, Programs, MS-DOS Prompt"
(b) ATTRIB C:\Windows\Fonts
Mine shows...
C:\ATTRIB C:\Windows\Fonts
S R FONTS C:\Windows\FONTS
(c) If yours is different, then turn on S & R...
ATTRIB C:\Windows\Fonts +S +R

(3) Is there a Policy Setting that prevents adding a font...?...

Open the Registry to...

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\Exp
lorer

....this way... "START button, Run, RegEdit", &...

(a) Click plus signs, beginning left of "HKEY_CURRENT_USER",
& ending left of "Policies".
(b) Click "Explorer" in the left pane, & look in the right pane.
Those are the "policies".
(c) Use the Registry menu to "Export Registry File".
Create a text file, & post it for examination.

WARNING: Do not get carried away in the Registry. It is very important
to the proper functioning of Windows. Muss it badly, & you must boot to
DOS & "Scanreg /Restore". Then, choose the date of the last successful
boot from the five offered.

for your sheet music. When that font can't be found, the OS tries to
use the most similar one that it can find. For most things, that works
fine. Clearly, for this it doesn't.

The most likely reason for this is that the system administrator at
your office doesn't allow you to install things, like fonts. Probably,
with a more complex or up-to-date program, the installation wouldn't
even have gotten started. This program probably needs no registry
settings, nothing to set off the alarms (many programs work that way,
but not big, complex ones). But the font installation gets blocked.

Thanks, Zabcar. I personally never installed that. I see you have found
a FAQ for Lohmeyer-- very good! Still, as it is an office machine, there
YET may be a policy setting for him to adjust on the day he gets out of
prison!

Is the operator set up like my computer was set up with VPN access to the
work's intranet and that is why there are grayed out area such as for now I
cannot limit the ram usage in 98SE because that option is grayed out because
my 98SE machine side is now a part of the work's domain as well as the XP
side being the primary part of the work's domain. Actually, I intended just
for the XP Pro. side to be work related but the 98SE side not wanting to be
left out came along for the ride much to my disappointment. I guess there is
no way to easily remove the 98SE side of my computer from the domain of APS
is there? Anyway, it is just a thought about the op home pc being part of
the work network and therefore also being subject to its limitations.
