Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (KB867801) update
Edie,
GoBack provides instructions when booting your system how to boot to DOS, use them and you will be able to follow my instructions and solve your problem. Since I don't have or use GoBack I don't know what you see on your screen and therefore how to proceed. I seem to recall that a GoBack menu appears when you boot your PC. Is there anything there that tells you how to then boot to DOS such as an option to boot from a floppy? (Fdisk) It asked if I wanted to enable large disk support and I answered No. In my previous reply I had said: "click Y (for large disk support)" however that is unimportant as you were only using FDISK to check the partition layout and even that is now unnecessary as you are using GoBack. As you can see from your posting GoBack modifies the partition table to read "Type - Non-DOS" which is why you cannot see the drive from DOS. The bit concerned need to be restored so that the type reads "DOS" after which you will be able to see the floppy when booting from a floppy. As I said I believe GoBack has the instructions on the screen when booting telling you what you need to do. BTW, I appreciate your faith in me. I really didn't know the C:\_RESTORE file needed to be renamed to take care of the problem. How come? g I had already told you twice that that was the cause of your " "Windows Could Not Upgrade the File %1 from %2 %1: %2" error". vbg You mention problems with IPHLPAPI.DLL. You also mention that you are using AOL. So it should come as no surprise that the problem is AOL 9 which is badly written and that those involved at AOL clearly have never used Win Me and seem clueless as to how to install their application attempting as they are to use an incompatible version of iphlpapi.dll. the problem being that the version placed by AOL in Program Files\Common Files\AOL\ACS\Net\Winme is different from that in the windows\system folder which cannot be replaced without AOL using the correct procedure and certificate as it is one of many system files protected against amendment or deletion by Win Me's System File Protection mechanism. The solution here is to remove AOL 9 and wait for AOL to fix the problem although given how long AOL 9 had been released it seems they are in no sort of hurry to fix the problem (and AOL wonder why their customer numbers are getting smaller). Regards, -- Mike Maltby Edie wrote: Thanks Mike. I do have GO Back running. I can revert the drive to a previous time, boot from floppy or disable Go Back. It also has an option to clear all history for the C drive. I'll try to get more info booting to get to DOS to see C. When I ran FDISK a message appeared saying the disk was larger than 512MB and described the improved support for large disks resulting in more efficient use of disk space on large drives. An important message also said if I enabled the large disk support and created new drives on the disk it would not allow me to access new drives using other operating systems not designed for FAT32 or older disk utilities might not work. It asked if I wanted to enable large disk support and I answered No. I then chose option 4, Display Partition Info. Here's the info that displayed: Current fixed disk drive - 1 Partition - 1 Status - A Type - Non-DOS Volume Label - No data Mbytes - 19077 System - No data Usage - 100% Total disk space is 19093MB Should I enable large disk support? One other thing. I get an error message occasionally when booting to windows that says the IPHLPAPI.DLL file can't start. Check file to determine problem. I searched for the file and found 2: One is in Windows\System and the other is in Program Files\Common Files\AOL\ACS\Net\Winme. Could that be causing a problem? How can I determine the problem with either of these files? BTW, I appreciate your faith in me. I really didn't know the C:\_RESTORE file needed to be renamed to take care of the problem. Thanks again for your help. |

Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (KB867801) update
Edie wrote:
I did boot from the floppy from GO Back. At the A prompt I typed CD C:, C:\ appeared but reverted back to the A prompt without letting me enter the C drive. That's progress of a sort but again I never actually asked you to use CD C:. What actually happens now when from the A:\ when you used the ATTRIB and REN commands? However I don't know about using any "GoBack floppy". I would prefer you to use a Win Me boot floppy/setup disk otherwise you won't have the ATTRIB command. So please read the GoBack screen when your system boots and follow the instructions their for how to boot to DOS. I have also recently ran Scan Disk, Defrag, and scanned my system for viruses using Norton's AntiVirus 2004 Professional (nothing was found). This may have given you some satisfaction but as I have repeatedly said will do nothing to solve your problem. You know what you need to do, I've told you the commands to use and until you do so you will continue to see the error every time you boot your PC. -- Mike Maltby |
