New PC, 98 with old BIOS
That's the best I can describe it.
I have a hard drive from my old PC and it won't boot in Normal Mode in my new PC, I suspect because it was mad with a different BIOS. However, it boots just fine in Safe Mode. Is there a way to get around this? (I hope I made it clear enough). Thanks. |

You need to reinstall all drivers. First, can you FIND all of the drivers
for the new hardware that will support Win98? -- Gary S. Terhune MS-MVP Shell/User www.grystmill.com "William B. Lurie" wrote in message ... That's the best I can describe it. My new system is a Compaq Presario that has no installation or maintenance CD. It has a separate partition that is used for maintenance and they're probably there somewhere. They're made for XPHome. I have the 98 installation CD, are you suggesting they are there? What, specifically, should I look for, and what should I do with whatever I might find? Remember, I'm part way home because at least I have it running in Safe Mode. I get other options with F8, but have no idea what to do with them. |

1. Your new system very likely can't run Windows 98.
2. If it can, you go to the hardware manufacturers' sites and get the 98 drivers IF available. 3. No, the drivers you need aren't likely to be available. What model Compaq? All you said is Presario. There's more to it than that. -- Gary S. Terhune MS-MVP Shell/User www.grystmill.com "William B. Lurie" wrote in message ... Gary S. Terhune wrote: You need to reinstall all drivers. In response to 1., Gary, it runs things nicely in 98, but I've not been able to go beyond Safe Mode. In response to 2., I can pose the problem to HP but I'd be surprised if they were interested in helping. As for 3., I didn't think you'd want the complete model designation. You haven't been able to go beyond Safe Mode because of the lack of Normal
Mode drivers. If the drivers aren't available from HP (or the appropriate manufacturer if a third-party unit), they aren't available. Knowing all this, what kind of response are you looking for? -- Gary S. Terhune MS-MVP Shell/User www.grystmill.com "William B. Lurie" wrote in message ... Gary S. Terhune wrote: 1. I think you said it quite clearly, Gary. I can use your statement, with minor modification, to send to HP and ask them how I can get the required drivers. It may be a dead end, but there's still a feasible workaround: I can re-install 98 from scratch, and it will (I hope) install with the proper drivers for this PC. |

William, the point is that there are no such drivers. You need them, but
they don't exist and never will. In other words, you can't do what you want to do. -- Gary S. Terhune MS-MVP Shell/User www.grystmill.com "William B. Lurie" wrote in message ... Gary S. Okay, Gary, I'm resigned to taking a different path. I'm installing Win 98 anew on an empty hard drive. I am aware of the pitfalls involved with large RAM and have cut back to 512MB. I understand that there may be complications, in that my current MB runs at 3.1 GHz. Are there patches or upgrades still available, for Win 98, that I can download and use to upgrade my old original issue Win98? Thank you. |
