DirectX 9 - Has anyone successfully installed this?
I asked about this problem last night in the windowsupdate group but
realized this may be more the appropriate place: Each time I try to install DirectX 9.0b, it says the install was successful but after I restart and then run dxdiag, it still says I have DirectX 8.1 installed. There are no error messages in the file Windows Update.log. I always disable my antivirus while downloading updates from WU. Using Google has yielded no obvious solutions for this problem. I even tried to install the newer DirectX 9.0c by downloading it and installing manually. That didn't work either but gave the error "a cabinet file necessary for installation cannot be trusted". The only results I could find on Google for that error related to Windows XP but not ME. Have also tried to install DirectX 9.0b manually by downloading and running the install. Still no go. It seems to think it installed OK but has not. Can anyone help with this? Thank you, Nevans |

Hey Mike,
Dxdiag indicates that my Nvidia nvdisp.drv (4.14.10.5664) and SoundMax smwdm.sys (5.12.01.3513) are, in its words: "not digitally signed, which means that it has not been tested by Microsoft's Windows Hardware Quality Labs." I updated my Nvidia drivers from Nvidia's website several months ago but am not certain how long it's been since I updated my SoundMax drivers. How can I be sure to get signed drivers? Do you think this is why DX9 won't install? Nevans On Mon, 4 Oct 2004 22:00:39 +0100, Mike M wrote in : Run DXDiag. (Start , Run, enter dxdiag in the box and click OK). What does it say is the problem? As for installing DX9 on Win Me I perhaps have been fortunate and have never experienced any problems. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP [2001-2005] Nevans wrote: I asked about this problem last night in the windowsupdate group but realized this may be more the appropriate place: Each time I try to install DirectX 9.0b, it says the install was successful but after I restart and then run dxdiag, it still says I have DirectX 8.1 installed. Nevans,
To be perfectly honest I haven't a clue. :-) You might want to try posting to a newsgroup supporting DX such as perhaps microsoft.public.directx.video or microsoft.public.directx.misc. Sorry not to be able to give any help. I really only replied to try an reassure you that DX9a, b or c will all install on Win Me. Knowing little about DX and not being a gamer that really is about as far as I can go. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP [2001-2005] Nevans wrote: Hey Mike, Dxdiag indicates that my Nvidia nvdisp.drv (4.14.10.5664) and SoundMax smwdm.sys (5.12.01.3513) are, in its words: "not digitally signed, which means that it has not been tested by Microsoft's Windows Hardware Quality Labs." Mike,
I'm not a gamer either. Just like to keep things "up to date". Thanks for trying to help. I may or may not pursue this any further. Having been a mainframe programmer for more than 20 years, there was a time I would have expended a lot of effort in order to get something like this resolved on my home PC. But as I "age", things like this just don't seem as important as they used to. I'll wait until something significant goes wrong with my PC that's really worth devoting time to! I downloaded the DX 9.0c redistributable from Microsoft (approx. 34 MB), ran it offline and now have 9.0c on my PC. When I ran dxdiag after installing 9.0c, it indicated that an input device registry key was missing: Input Devices Poll w/ Interrupt: Yes Registry: Errors found: Key 'HKCR\CLSID\{92187326-72B4-11d0-A1AC-0000F8026977}\ProgID' is missing. A Google search for the solution found the fix in an old Windows Magazine article from 2001 which showed what to add to the registry to fix the error. The article can be found at http://www.techweb.com/winmag/column...03.htm?print=1 and the fix is to create/run a .reg file like the following (I bet it wraps badly but here it is): REGEDIT4 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CLASSES\CLSID\{9218732 6-72B4-11d0-A1AC-0000F8026977}\ProgID] @="Game Controllers CPL Handler" |

Nevans,
To be honest I thought you had already tried that approach. Thanks though for the feedback and I will try and remember that this method worked for you when I next see someone reporting a similar problem. The problem with the input device key being missing is well known and usually the result of running a registry cleaner although no doubt there are other possible reasons for this particular problem. Cheers, -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP [2001-2005] Nevans wrote: Just wanted to let you know I found a thread similar to this on alt.windows-me that recommended downloading/installing the full, redistributable version of DirectX instead of the smaller webupdate version.
