Default i'm at wits end....IDE Drives Installation Error

I have recently taken on the task of fixing an old computer, pretty sure it
has Win98 or ME on it. Anyways it just shuts off out of no where. It will
working ok then just shut off. I wonder if it is getting hot or the
motherboard has a short or what. But my original question is that I'm
getting an error that I can't go anywhere with. I've Googled it, looked
over all newsgroups. Here it is....'IDE Drives Installation Error...For
best reliability & performance, please change the stand alone slave drive to
master. System Halt...

If anyone can point me in the right direction or have encountered this
before, please help.

Thanks

If the drive is currently configured as slave, then change it to master.
This probably involves moving a jumper on the drive itself, but if the
system is configured with cable select instead of master slave, it will
involve changing the cable connector used for the drive.

That makes sense. If the hard drive(the only one in the system) is set as a
slave right now why would this computer work for so long with the same
setup? I'm just confused on how it went from working with this setup to not
working at telling me to physically change the slave to a master.

thanks

Both the ability to work with only a slave installed and the message are
specific to your BIOS - it's not useful to speculate on why this might have
happened without detailed information about the internal workings of the
BIOS. For instance, you may have a setting that changes the device order
for boot purposes. If the BIOS lost its settings (eg, the battery went
flat) and then defaulted to standard device settings, the message would
appear.
