Default Help! Win98 won't boot

Just to make sure we are on the same page--you were able to substitute
winfile.exe for explorer.exe and the PC still shut down? If so, the final
thing I can recommend is renaming the config.sys and autoexec.bat files by
changing their extensions to: .old and see if that helps. Otherwise,
hope someone else jumps in with a good suggestion.

Thank you for your response. No, I did not have any anti-
virus program running, but I read the article and tried
that approach. The same thing happened: my computer shuts
down when it reaches the Win98 startup screen. Also, I
forgot to mention that when I try to run in safe mode, my
computer shuts down as well.

Did you have your anti virus program running by chance

when you installed
the SP? If so, you might want to try reinstalling the SP

utilizing the
approach in this article:

After downloading and installing the Internet Explorer

6.0
Service Pack 1, I restarted my computer per the
instructions, and my computer turns off when it reaches
the Windows 98 start-up screen. I tried to restart my
computer several times, but it always shuts down before
Windows load. I've tried using my back-up registry and I
used scandisk and nothing wrong was found, but Windows
still wouldn't start. What else should I try? I don't

have
a Win98 start-up CD, so I wasn't able to try replacing
win.com. The only thing I downloaded before the problem
was from Microsoft's site, so I doubt it could be a

virus.
Thanks in advance.
