160 GB HD in win98SE
Hi. I'm considering a new larger HD, and I understand Win98 has
issues with HD's as large as what I need. I'm hoping to buy a 160 GB drive. Some of what I've read says I'll only be able to use 137 GB of it, right? So is that a limit for the drive, or can I get around it by partitioning the drive into a few smaller volumes? Any advice on this would be appreciated. Thanks. |

Hi Brillo,
If the system BIOS supports the large disk size and the latest version of fdisk is used then yes the drive can be partitioned below into partitions no larger than 127GB's. That being said, just because it can be done doesn't mean there may not be problems. There has been reports of total data loss with drives over 137GB's in a Win98 machine. The best advise would be to install a drive under 137GB's. Fdisk Does Not Recognize Full Size of Hard Disks Larger than 64 GB: http://support.microsoft.com/default...;EN-US;q263044 -- Regards, Bert Kinney [MS-MVP DTS] http://dts-l.org/ "Brillo" wrote Hi. There have been many reports of success using a PCI adapter card which will give you the UDMA100/133 functionality, as well as providing 48-bit LBA capability if your machine BIOS doesn't support disks larger than 127/137G. My daughter installed one on her Dell Dimension XPS 450 which works just fine. It was a Promise, a model TX100, if my memory doesn't betray me, and it only cost ~$30. It all depends on how badly you want the extra disk space. The chances are that you will need to use such a controller card if you want the larger disk. You will then need to partition the total space such that no partition exceeds W98's limit of 127G (assuming you are updated fully). With the card comes software that you install that enables W98 to use the larger disk, though it won't change the restriction on partition size. See http://www.48bitlba.com. HTH, Joe |

I have already purchased a Maxtor 160 Gig external drive, that I had hoped to
use on three different PC's in our house.(not networked). One is W98SE, one is ME the other is W2000. I have been reading up before even trying it. I understand I would keep it as it came - FAT32. Would I partition it using W2000 into the sizes acceptable to W98, or should I download the FDISK fix and partition it using W98? If I did nothing, what would W98 do? My W98 Motherboard is an ASUS P2B S(PC100), with Pentium 2. Thanks for any help "jt3" wrote: "Brillo" wrote in message om... Hi.
