Default dial-up networking problem

For the past few days, my dial-up networking window keeps poppping up
whether I want it to or not, at VERY annoying times. Most days, it's
waiting for me (opened) when I turn on my pc b4 the whole desktop even
loads!

I did nothing to make this happen, as it started from one day to the
next without my having installed or fiddled with anything. I don't have
any "automatically connect" boxes checked (never did), so I don't know
why this keeps happening.

It's very annoying because every time it does it (anywhere from every 10
seconds to 1x/minute) you have to stop what you're doing in another
program and close the dial-up window.

Anybody know how I can correct this problem? Please give me simple
instructions if you can.

Thank you VERY much for any help,
Bobbett

As a first shot, update your virus scanner and run a scan.
You may have a dialler Trojan trying to get out.

My virus scan is updated weekly (or more often) and run daily.
But in the interest of this problem, I did both, and no problems were found.

Any other suggestions?

Bobbett

free for personal use spybot/adware detection & removal tools:
http://www.safer-networking.org/
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

Might be worth checking out... AVs generally don't sweep for spyware or
adware

Default dial-up networking problem

I dl'd and installed EVERYTHING anyone here suggested, including the
Stinger, Ad-Aware, spybot, Shredder, etc. Every program found a few
things it eliminated from my pc, but nothing has changed the fact that
my dial-up window pops up ALL the time (unless I'm already connected).

Any other things I could try?

There are a number of programs that run "autoupdates": every once in
awhile they try to connect to the net to look for update patches... mind
you that feature is more for people who have "always on" connections.

I can understand "autoupdates" and such if it were every once in a while
(like my virus program, etc.) but this is constant, almost every 30
seconds!!!! And it started out of blue from one day to the next, and I
had NOT installed anything new or changed any of my settings the
previous day. Also, I am now getting more disconnects than I did
before, and in between a disconnect, if I don't completely turn my pc
off and restart it, then my connection lasts even a shorter period of
time (like only a few minutes). In some cases, the disconnect freezes
my pc, too.

Seems like a problem with my dial-up program, no? How would I check that?

Bobbett

In that case, there's a program running in the background trying to phone
home....
look here for instructions on how to clean up your startup axis, preventing
unnecessary programs loading

Spybot Search&Destroy seems to be the only major thing missing from your
anti-malware lineup that I can tell.

And what Noel said in his reply to your posts.
