I've actually not tried moving that one in Win98. However, you can try and report
your findings. I think you will find that all the programs that use that location
to create their sub-folders there, will have to be uninstalled and reinstalled after
the move, or they won't know where to look.

First, drag the folder to the new location you want to use.

Next, look in the Registry at this key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders

There will be a value named "AppData"
Double-click it, change the path to the path for your new location, and click OK.

Reboot.

See if that works.

How about, after changing the target in the registry, deleting the contents
of the old folder, while still leaving it there? - That way, any apps that
have the folder hard-coded would still find it present, and it should be a
fairly simple matter to sort out the problem ones, and deal appropriately.

I'll have a play.....

Hmm - it looks like there's another value that has to be changed - my VPC
brought up a Ddhelp error on first reboot, and reverted to the old entry
thereafter......

If I copy the contents of the old folder across to the new one, then the
system reboots OK - OE works fine without messing around, but still looks in
the old folder
.....and the entry has reverted again!!

Perhaps the HKLM\Software\MicrosoftWindows\\CurrentVersion\exp lorer\Shell
Folders entries need to be addressed also??

Do a Search/Replace.... ('C:\Windows\Application Data' - 'C:\AppData')
That gets it everywhere else but the HKCU and HKLM keys!
Is that thing hard-coded? - or what?? - I can't find any file containing the
string anywhere in the Windows folder ('C:\Windows\Application Data')

I wonder - is that entry in
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\ProfileReconciliation\AppData]
blocking it?

He wants to free some space on the C: drive?
AFAIK, there's no other significant user of the Application Data folder than
OE - in which case the OP may be better off just using the GUI wizard in OE
Tools | Maintenance to move that, rather than risk breaking something that
doesn't want to play ball with simple manipulation.
/speculation

In Win98SE here, these are the sub-folders of the Windows\Application Data
folder....certainly quite a lot more than OE:

Adobe
Aim
CyberLink
Google
Identities
InterTrust
IrfanView
Macromedia
Microsoft
Mozilla
Opera
Spybot - Search & Destroy
Sun

Mainly to free space on the C drive, I want to keep it for Windows only
and have programs on another drive. There are 18 main folders in the
Application Data folder and it is taking up a fair bit of space at the
moment

Thanks again
Gerald
