Default Those little pop-up lists...

Hi!

When you fill out a form an enter the first letter, a list pops up from
which you can choose an entry -- like name, address, email address, etc.
When you begin to enter a URL you've used before, a list of those starting
with what you've entered pops up so you can make a selection.

Where are those lists? I need to weed out some incorrect information in
them.

Also, there's a "temp" folder under Windows 98 and "TEMP" and "Internet
Temporary Files" under Windows. Do they contain anything that needs to be
saved? Can the contents be cleaned out from time to time?

I do clean out the "cookies" file from time to time. Are there other files
I can clean out now and then?

What else can I take off my hard drive that will cause no problems and open
more space?

Thanks...

Phil

Hi Phil,

When the list pops up, just highlight the incorrect entry and touch your
delete key.
As for the Temp folders, you can delete everything in those folders,
however, if a file is still in use, Windows will not allow you to delete it.
You should try to make those deletions immediately after you boot up, as
there will be fewer (possibly no) files you can't delete.

One of the better places to make deletions is in your Fonts folder. Not only
will this reclaim hard drive space, but it will also allow your system to
boot more quickly. My suggestion is to create a new folder called
"OldFonts", or something similar, then move the unwanted fonts there until
you are sure that they really are no longer needed. You can also search the
drive(s) for files with extensions like .tmp, .$$$, .001, .002, etc. these
should also be safe to delete. There are also quite a few .TXT files, and
what you can do is to ZIP them all up into one file to save space. You may
also be able to delete all .LOG files as well. Again, if the file is active,
Windows will not let you delete it.

I'm sure there are a "slew" of others that can be deleted, however, this
list should free up quite a bit.

Happy hunting...

If you are going to start removing fonts, these articles should be read first, as
there are some fonts Windows must have in order to start up:

Temp files:

Reboot.

Open the Temp folder and delete all Temp files:
-Click StartRun, type %temp% and click OK.
-Press Ctrl+A to select all, then press Delete.

Delete the Temporary Internet Files:
Click Start Settings Control Panel Internet Options General tab.
Click the Delete Files button, then put a checkmark in the box to Delete all
offline content, and click OK, and OK.
