Still having problems with extacting files in Windows 98 SE
My apologies for bothering you with this problem again. I want to extract
the Net7.cab, Net9.cab, Net10.cab cabinet files from the Win98 directory/folder on the installation CD in order to access the vserver.vxd, msnp32.dll and ndiswan.vxd system files. Like I said before, I'm working from DOS with the aid of a start disk using the Windows support option 2 because I can't boot to Windows. When I use the various commands shown below for extracting the cabinet files mentioned above, the files appear to be extracted as they show up on the DOS screen with no error. But when I look for the files afterwards, they can't be found anywhere on the hard drive or cd drive. Before starting, I created a Extraction directory on the root of my hard disk for containing the extracted files. When I used the command below, the files appeared to be extracted from that particular cabinet file, as the files are listed downwards on the moving screen while it goes through the process of extraction with no error reported. However, when I switch to the C:\Extraction directory, the files can't be seen. This command is used below: a:\ extract d:\Win98\Net7.cab /L c:\Extraction The output of this command would show 151 files extracted including the msnp32.dll file. However, when I switch to the Extraction directory on the hard disk and do a DIR, no files are listed, which is so annoying. Even if I do a c:\Extraction "dir /AH" or c:\Extraction "dir /AR", no hidden or read only files can be found either. I also tried switching to the CD ROM drive and issued the command below: d:\win98 extract Net7.cab /L c:\Extraction The files again appear to be extracted but are actually not when you switch to the destination directory which of course is c:\Extraction. Even omitting the /L c:\Extraction from the above command will not achieve anything. Furthermore, if I interchanged the positioning of the /L c:\extraction and the cabinet file, it would yield the same result. I would like to advise you that I have also tried this command below: a:\ extract d:\Win98\Net7.cab\msnp32.dll /L c:\Extraction. The output of this command reported an error saying that this file could not be opened. Anyway, I didn't expect this third command would work. But the first two commands listed above should work as the syntax is correct and everything. At this stage, I have tried numerous combinations. There must be some bug with this extraction tool when working from DOS with the startup disk. I know that the required files msnp32.dll, ndiswan.vxd, vserver.vxd, are located in the Net7.cab, Net9.cab and Net10.cab files respectively in the Win98 directory on the Windows 98 SE CD. Please refer to Win 98 SE of this url: http://www.modem-help.co.uk/help/cab.html#l98. They are even listed after issuing the first two commands above. However, unfortunately, these files can't be found afterwards, in the Extraction directory on the hard disk or any part of this drive for that matter. To get to the point, the cabinet files appear to be extracted but they can't be found afterwards in any part of the hard drive or CD drive. If I could only get passed this step, I would be very satisfied. Can anybody please tell me what I am doing wrong as it is very important to me since it may help me to avoid a reinstallation. Thanks. Regards, Martin Healy |
