i am having problems with my computer freezing (it lasts
about a minute at a time but i happens every 5-7 minutes),
also i have no space on my pc left so i cannot install
anything. there are loads of things on this pc that
previous user had, however i do not need it. i would like
to wipe the whole thing off but only to keep my aol files,
address book etc. as important staff on it.once everything
is off i would like to install windowa xp which i already
have. what is your advice, i need help desperately.

Open My Computer, and right click on the C: drive, click
Properties. On the window that comes up there should be an
item called Disk Cleanup. Use it.

Then open Add/Remove Programs in the Start = Settings =
Control Panel to remove all the software you don't want.

Whe you've remove everything, go Start = Programs =
Accessories = System Tools = Disk Defragmenter and run
it. If it sticks, enter msconfig in the Start = Run box
and disable the programs listed under the Startup tab
(except the System Tray) and then run the Defrag program.

You should check that the PC is compatible with XP before
you install it.

Look under the letter W on this page for links to sites
that test for XP compatibility while you're online:

You might have to update the BIOS to make the PC
compatible with XP.

See this page on the BIOS if you don't know what it is:

See MVP Emeritus Gary Woodruff's excellent articles on updating to Windows XP.
Of particular interest to you is Files and Settings Transfer (FAST) Wizard. I
recommend that you use FAST to save your personal files, then perform a "Clean
Install" of Windows XP.

Have you tried deleting the programs that you don't need?
Go to the Start button and
Go Settings
Go Control Panel
Go Add/Remove Programs
click on the ones that aren't yours (do this individually
and let it or say ok to Uninstall
Then keep doing this until you have the ones you need but
keep Internet Explorer and the Windows ones on until you
figure out your next step.

Hope this helps (HTH)
