PC not starting
My sister has a PC preloaded with Win98SE and has IE6 &OE6. When she powered
it ON today there was a continuous whining noise from the processor and it was not booting. The fan is working. What could be the problem and what is the remedy? Thanking you Capt K Ripendran |

What could be the problem and what is the remedy? Thanking you Capt K Ripendran Desktop/tower system or notebook/laptop? Any floppy or Optical drive activity? Any of the system's power, turbo or drive activity LEDs illuminating? Any error messages appearing on screen? Any indication of the early stages of Windows starting? Many computers display text mode messages during a Power On Self Test (POST) that runs from semi-permanent memory (ROM). Error message content is relevant to diagnosing problems. Any beeps coming from inside the case? Many towers have a small speaker in the bottom of the case or behind the face plate and use beeps to report, in a VERY general manner, the nature of problems that might prevent POST reporting on the external display. Most beep once early in the startup sequence. Note that older cases may have 120V AC connected to the front panel power switch (shock hazard if you touch the contacts). All computers have static sensitive parts inside which are particularly vulnerable during low humidity conditions produced by your office or home heating system. |

My guess is the power supply (or the connectors connecting it to the
motherboard), assuming you're seeing nothing on the monitor. I believe there are some articles on the net suggesting how that can be tested (it's not completely trivial), but maybe someone else has a better suggestion. A whining noise from the CPU might be the CPU cooling fan bearing shot, or
starting to go. . Check that the fan is still running. -- Jeff Richards ---------------------------------------- "Capt K Ripendran" wrote in message ...
